Scouting Notes on Arkansas

Rewatching some tape and looking at stats on Arkansas, they're not as good as you might think.

Their adjusted non conference schedule ranks in the 150's which is middle of the pack, as we all know they schedule light in the non conference. SO when you look at their stats they're a little skewed based on competition.

Judging by SEC play, they're arguably the worst shooting team in the conference, especially from deep. They have shot 18% from 3 overall in their 3 conference games. Only 12 points of their 76 ppg comes from outside (19% of total output). To go along with their awful shooting from outside, they're also shooting 61% from the FT line while averaging 22 FTA a game. Here is how their scoring breakdown is: 60% inside, 21% from FT, and 19% from 3. They make their living inside while having a very lengthy and athletic 4 guard lineup.

Defensively is where they typically are really good. They are ranked 7th in the country in tempo adjusted defense per KenPom. They allow below 45% shooting from the field in SEC play and they're top 30 in 3 pointers given up and 3 % allowed to opponents. They make you earn it and want to slow the pace down when they're on defense, and push it if they can on the rebound. They're around the top 50 in adjusted tempo so they like to play fast because they know they're not a good shooting team.

Alabama matches up very well with Arkansas defensively, because Alabama ranks 11th in opponent 3% at 27.8% and 26th in opponent 3's made per game with 5.5. They have the length to match them, but also quicker in transition as Alabama ranks 3rd in the country in adjusted tempo. It will come down to turnovers and if Alabama can limit them in a very tough environment.

‘24 SG Elijah Moore

2024 6’4 SG Elijah Moore plans on visiting Alabama soon and said he may end up making a decision by the end of January.

Alabama has a really good shot at this kid as he just released his final 5 schools yesterday being Alabama, Arkansas, Miami, Syracuse, Oklahoma State. He’s only visited Syracuse and Okie St, but if he visits Bama I think they likely land him. Moore is a fast riser moving from 102 to 68 in the ranks. He’s an elite shooter and would fit perfectly at Alabama.

Thoughts on Alabama Dismantling Kentucky 78-52

What am emphatic win where if you didn't believe that Alabama was good, you believe now. Alabama played incredibly defense, didn't turn the ball over, and got a balanced scoring effort.

Alabama started off to a very quick start on a 11-2 run, before it becoming a 16-15 game halfway through the first half. It was a nip and tuck game for a while, but Alabama had an 8-2 run at the end of the half to take a 35-24 lead into half time. After halftime, it was all Alabama outscoring UK 43-28. Kentucky dominated the offensive boards 20-8 and won the overall rebounding battle, but held UK to 28% shooting. I didn't think Alabama played a flawless game, but their gameplan sure was in bringing Oscar out to the perimeter and make him defend ball screens. Early on Charles and Noah dominated him on the roll and that is why he played sparingly the whole game.

Brandon Miller started slow, but showed why he will likely be a top 5 pick in the NBA draft with his speed, athleticism, and his incredible shooting and touch around the rim. Mark Sears played a great game as usual, but Quinerly has strung together a few great games together. He has become that third PG that Alabama desperately needed and has been incredible breaking down the defense.

Alabama faces another tough test next week at Arkansas, but Alabama showed today that they are at the top of the SEC right now and sent a message.
