A lot of talk that Oats could be on the list. We know Oats is happy, but his name will probably come up so just be prepared. Good thing they gave him the extension when we did.

Might as well settle in for this for the next several years.

Every blue blood and self appointed blue blood basketball program will be assumed to have Oats at or near the top of the list.

Does Indiana even count for this now? They're kind of like Nebraska football but without the 90s titles and equally as irrelevant for 20 years+. Also like Neb football they ran off the last good coach they had and keep reaching for the next hot name.

We have to hope that Byrne stays on top of it and that there isn't that one program that Oats would leave everything and take a pay cut for the opportunity.

This is true. Miller’s contract was more then Oats new one. Really need to make Oats a top 20 contract.

Apparently Mark Cuban paid Archies buyout. Coming from the IU guys on tMB.

Mere speculation by IU fans on who paid the buyout. Any interest in Oats from IU will get him another raise which will be much deserved. John Beilein will be IU’s next coach. He’s 68-years young with another 10 years in him.

If Oats wants to leave after this season to try to rebuild Indiana, then he isn't much of a math teacher. Indiana fans make Auburn Football fans look like pessimist. Talk about unrealistic expectations, a lack of a roster and four years to win a National Title or get fired and you have to compete against an NBA legend, Izzo, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, Maryland, Iowa and Purdue Indiana has fired more good coaches since Bobby Knight left that most SEC teams have ever hired. Indiana Basketball is the Tennessee of SEC Football on coaching hires.

I remember when Bobby Bowden was asked if FSU should join the SEC, Bowden said something to the effect that you have to be crazy, in the SEC you have to play Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee to win a title and in the ACC you have to play Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia, Maryland, NC State and so forth. I want to be an old coach.

In the SEC you don't have to win against the likes of Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan State every year. The win yesterday is good for five years at $3+ million a year. He would be a fool to leave right now. LSU is in trouble, Auburn is in trouble, Georgia has no coach, Florida kids are going to love Oats, and Alabama can pick who it wants from Mississippi. Oats style of play is what the kids want. As long as he keeps Pett, he has it made.

Yes, he is a Midwest guy, but Indiana is not where I would want to end up. The job that concerns me will be when Izzo leaves Michigan State, but right now he has Gary, Ambrose-Hylton, Frenchie, JQ, Ellis, Primo, and Shack back for next year, Miles is going to fit right in somewhere, you have a great incoming Freshman and two fairely good recruits to add in. Did I mention we have probably two spots for players coming through the Portal. Harper says we are going to get a good one.

In short this years team might be good, but it is not as good as next years will be.

"Sources say Oats has no desire to leave Alabama for Indiana for multiple reasons, one of the obvious ones being his recently signed contract extension that includes one of the biggest buyouts in CBB at present."

I'll add a few thoughts here:
  1. Oats just got to Tuscaloosa. Seems like he is cut from the same cloth as Saban in that he is a blue collar guy from the Midwest who believes in commitment and building something long term, not pump and dump.
  2. Oats has a much better shot to win big with Alabama in the SEC than he does at Indiana in the Big Ten.
  3. I'm not so sure Alabama doesn't bring just as big of a name as IU thanks to all of the success of Saban and the football team. Plus (and TideFever alluded to this above), is IU even considered one of the blue blood programs in college basketball? The Hoosiers have been an after thought for many decades now.
  4. Tuscaloosa is a special place and Oats alluded to this when he was brought in to interview and take a look around. And, he's starting to build something very special with the basketball program.

Some people talk about football being a negative for the basketball program but I don’t think Oates is one of those. Football brings in tons of money for the athletic program and gives Oates a large budget to work with. If he keeps winning which I think he will a refurbished or new arena will come

Agree. And let's be honest, the football program takes pressure off of the basketball coach.

Probably not .... but do you think 20 million would stand in the way of Bama hiring a FB coach they wanted?

IU is a BB school and with the football team having a good year ... they could find the money. I DO NOT think they will.

Sure would feel better if in the next 2 years the arena renovations were more than a dream on a piece of paper.

Oats and all coaches will say football is a benefit ..... but Oats and all top coaches live for the pressure.

They paid Archie 10 mil to leave. They’d have to pay Bama 10 mil for him to go there. That’s 20 mil before even paying Oats. It’s not happening

He ain’t going anywhere

Oats does not seem like the type that excepts losing and for that reason I think Bama is in great shape that Oats will be compensated really well now and in the future. This may sound crazy but Oats has done met and exceeded expectations at Bama whereas at Indiana they still living in the Bobby Knight mind set.

Hope after this Final Four, perhaps even title run he gets a fat raise and we break ground on a brand new state of he art gym within 2-3 years. He could maintain a top rung program here and compete for championships and there would be no need to go somewhere else.

CNO is NOT looking for a 'Brass Ring' he is an earnest, down-to-earth individual with a family that is happy to be in Tuscaloosa.

He understands the Bama Brand and how he can leverage that for his team's success.
