I meant to post this a few days ago, but we have a lot of long time Bama BB fans on this board, and I was curious who were the teams over the years that you had the most confidence in coming into the NCAA tournament. I started watching Bama BB in ‘84. My list will cause a lot of pause amongst some on here, because my confidence level does not always correspond to our seeding coming into the tournament.

1. ‘23 - before I heard about B Miller’s injury.
2. ‘87 - just super unlucky with Providence.
3. ‘90 - still know we should have beat that Loyola team.
4. ‘89 - that team came in hot, and was vastly underrated imop.
5. ‘21 - FT shooting killed us that night.
6. ‘02 - just didn’t have a good gut feeling on this team.
7. ‘91 - really talented team, but Arkansas was just so good that year.
8. ‘85 - really thought we were going to beat NC St in the sweet 16.
9. ‘86 - played a really talented Kentucky team tough in the sweet 16. The Terry Coner shot to beat Illinois in the game prior was one of the best Bama BB moments for me in my lifetime.
10. ‘92 - played like crap in the 2nd round vs North Carolina.

The ironic thing, is that, the only team to advance as far as the Elite 8, wasn’t even one of the top 10 teams I ever saw, or had confidence in. That, basically, goes to show you what a crap shoot this tournament is.

I remember that Kentucky team was so talented, and deep, they had a McDonalds All American(Cedric Jenkins)coming off the bench as their 7th or 8th player, and he was maybe even a junior at the time. The one downside of Wimp’s very talented teams were that they usually did not have much depth.

Don’t forget the ‘75-‘76 team that almost took down #1 (and undefeated) Indiana in the tournament.

Kentucky beat Bama four times that season. I went to the last loss in Atlanta.

I knew that team was great. Many’s favorite. I, unfortunately, didn’t get to watch them.
l was only 4 years old, but have heard alot about that team coached by CM Newton of course.

Thanks for your OP. Brings back a lot of memories. The 2 that still sting me the worst were Providence and Loyola-Marymount losses.

Those two loses are to this day the most painful for me too.

The 75-76 team had T.R. Dunn and Leon Douglas as upper classmen on the roster and Reggie Mule King. All three had decent NBA careers with Dunn and Douglas being very successful. They should probably be in the top 5.

Charles Cleveland and Robert Scott too, if memory serves.

I think Bobby Knight said they were the toughest team Indiana played that season.

That team is still the best in Bama history in my opinion. Beat North Carolina by 25/ a team that had 3 Olympians on the roster.

It probably was the best or second best and many of those guys were friends of mine, but none of them were Olympians. Leon played in the Pan American games and three were excellent pro players.

I was talking about the North Carolina team they beat by 25 in first round of NCAA.

Phil Ford, Walter Davis and Mitch Kupcheck.
