Knocking down 3s is good, but can he rebound and play defense? We need 4s & 5s that can defend the paint and get some rebounds.
But we don’t need too many of them. I can’t believe how many 4’s and 5’s we have now and none of them can shoot the 3. The whole deal was to have bigs that could shoot. So when Kessler dunked it, he was suppose to have to run back down and guard a guy on the perimeter than could shoot a 3 and he couldn’t block our guys shots when we got to the rim.
A big that can shoot the 3 is a bonus. It should not be a must. I would rather they have a good short game around the rim and in the paint. They are the ones that get the rebounds so the "fast-twitch" guys (guards) can sprint down court and shoot the 3s. We give up way too many easy baskets at the rim. Nobody wants to take the charging foul like Herb did last year. A player should not be able to get the rebound at one end and go unmolested to our basket for an easy layup. On pick plays where our defenders have to switch, all too often we end up with a guard or small forward on a true big, which is a mismatch. Bideako (sp) gets push so far off the block when attempting to rebound that one time he had to purchase a ticket to get back in the building.
That’s how Oats wants it to be, everybody can shoot the 3 and run the court.
A player getting a rebound on one end and going to shoot a layup on the other has nothing to do with a big man. That’s guards not getting back and doing their job.
And on switches, you’re going to get mismatches. That’s just the way it works. So it doesn’t matter who the big is, if he switches on the ball screen, a guard is going to be on a big. But we don’t switch the ball screens much so that’s not an issue but it also has nothing to do with this.

The portal looks like it may be more important than high school recruits. Unless you’re Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. They can just cherry pick the portal while they sign the best high school players. Pearl won the portal lottery this past off season.
Yep. I can see a lot of roster turnover this year to be honest. Rojas, Gurley, Tchikou, Ellis, Ambrose Hylton are most likely all gone. Wouldn’t surprise me if more left outside of those. Will have a lot of room for roster additions.
Yeah pretty sure you can add JQ, Shack and probably JD trying the pro route. With Ellis, Rojas and Gurley being seniors and I know Ellis has and maybe other 2 could stay for Covid year, but don’t see them back (not asked or wanting to come back). Plus I could see Ambrose or Tchikou one of these or maybe both leave. Also could see Miles gone as well and Holt leave if could replace him in the portal. That would leave Gary, Bediako and Nimari along with the 5 recruits. So that would be 5 open spots to fill. With that all said one of the big men mentioned above could stay thinking they would get playing time and Holt will most likely stay at least one more year. So it leaves us with 3 spots. Our needs with what is coming in is a big rebound dude or two and a point guard who can hit a 3 and feee throws. Past those 3 you can always add a shooter SG.
