I really am happy for Bama's performance otherwise, and I promise I'm not trying to focus solely on the negative. I thought all phases of the game last night showed improvement -- some of them like the pass rush and the running game, bordered on perfection, and Hurts improvement in accuracy had me cheering -- but I think everyone watching the game last night realized that something is wrong with the secondary, and after 6 games, we can't blame it on a statistical anomaly anymore. I don't pretend to know what it is, but this stat is not even in the same hemisphere as the rest of the team stats. This stat is in exile in frozen Siberia while the rest of Bama's stats are sunning themselves on a Caribbean beach and drinking pina coladas with little red umbrellas in them.

At 83rd out of 128, it's a lot easier to count the teams that are worse than Bama than it is to count the ones leading us. I guess the good news is that there are two SEC teams in the worse category and one of those is Texas A&M at 116th (Kentucky is the other) but here's a scary thought -- Bama's pass rush is the best I've seen in a long time. I think its even better than last year. What would our passing-D look like if we didn't have that pass rush? Austin Allen had mere seconds to throw last night. He got clobbered so many times, I was pretty sure he wouldn't make it to the end of the game. To his credit, he is one tough dude, but he was forced to throw on the run and sometimes throw against his body, and yet he threw for 400 yards. We had them in 3rd and 19 and he threw to a wide open receiver for 20 yards. What the….? How badly would we have been torched if we didn't have one of the best pass rushes in college football? And this raises other questions like, what the heck happened? Invasion of the body snatchers? These are the same guys we had last year and they should be better not worse, shouldn't they? Were we this bad last year? And the 64 thousand dollar question -- can we hang with the best teams with this level of secondary play?
