We were able to confirm a few things about the Nick Sheridan hire.
— Alabama was always planning on this being an option and new that Ryan Grubb remaining as the offensive coordinator was always going to be a long shot.
— Grubb had a buyout at Washington but never signed with Alabama, so it will be the Seattle Seahawks who are on the hook for that money.
— Sheridan will take on play-calling duties as well as move over to coach the quarterbacks. With that in mind, this is still Kalen DeBoer's offense. It's kind of like the defense when Nick Saban was in charge. Regardless of who was going to be Alabama's offensive coordinator this season, DeBoer was always going to have a say in things. Given his success and experience, Grubb would have required less attention from DeBoer than Sheridan. However, I've heard that there were times when DeBoer would even step in for Grubb on calls at Washington.
The Sheridan hire could end up being an easier transition than bringing in a new offensive coordinator who would have to learn DeBoer's system. Sheridan already has a grasp of things and will be easier to groom on short notice.
— Expect Sheridan and wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard to be named as co-offensive coordinators. That's more or less a way to elevate Shephard's status, as he is a very important member of the staff. It will still be Sheridan and DeBoer making the calls on offense.
