Anthony Grant

Dayton upset Kansas. This tournament has 2 big upsets so far. We need a win today!!
You beat me to it. I was just about to start a thread. What a great win and a great game for Grant & Co. Hopefully our team will come out with a different attitude and get fired up.

Yep! Kansas might as well quit the season.
I think too many of our fans think in terms of football when it comes to other sports. Losing one game in football, especially to a team without a name brand can pretty much kill your chances of winning anything. But in basketball there are too many things that can happen and "upsets" like this happens to most teams in the country at some point. One off night shooting isn't the end of the world and doesn't mean your team isn't capable of having a really good season.

Always like to see Grant do well. We watched the end of it. When we watch Dayton win a big game like that my 7 year old is always asking, “didn’t Alabama fire him?” Some places are just harder for some guys to succeed…

Nor should you look at your team in game 6 and say the sky is falling. This team has holes and will struggle but it's a long time until march.

Not to mention Iona is coached by a legit hall of fame caliber coach, and will make the tournament.

His presence is probably why we are shooting so badly!

Will happen more often too. Alabama basketball needs to realize its potential now and know that like football your gonna get teams best games. Like the mid major teams in basketball. They dont see Alabama they see the #10 ranking beside the name. These early games for the smaller schools is where they get those big wins to get into the tourney at the end of the year

Anthony Grant is by all accounts a man of great character and integrity. I still have a hard time pulling for him because of the condition that he left our basketball program in. Was hoping that Kansas would beat him today.
He ruined the program. I wanted him to succeed so much, however his heavy hand and dictatorial style broke everything!

He wouldn’t promote the program either. It was suggested that he should reach out to student groups on campus to encourage them to attend games. His response was that he had a family and therefore didn’t have time for that.

I disagree that he “ruined the program.” Grant won 20+ games three years straight, something that hadn't been done since Wimp. He was screwed out of a couple of NCAA Tournament bids which would have been the promotion for the program that was needed. He took over a very average program that did not have a commitment to winning. It still lacks the commitment it needs IMO.

Grant was not and still isn't a rah-rah guy. He's a basketball coach and that is what he wanted to do. I don't blame any man that is true to who he is; that's on the administration for not understanding who they hired and come up with a plan to promote the program in other ways. He's better off at a program where he can just coach and not have to beg people to come out and support the teams like you do at Alabama.

CMG had 5 20 + win season‘s before his golf game got in the way. Winning with Grant to me was due to a weak conference and very Ugly.

But he never won 20+ three years in a row, which is what I said CAG did. CAG won with what he had which is what a good coach does. Alabama wasn't getting great scorers and never had a deep bench. I would rather win ugly than lose pretty. His teams at Dayton have been entertaining to watch; he wins with what he has...

And when the conference started getting stronger we went south his last two years. I actually think he purposely tanked his last two year hoping to get fired. Look, I supported him for his first 3 years.

he should’ve been fired after that statement. People that make 2 million a year don’t work 40 hours.

Spot on my man. We have a lot of new pieces that have to get some chemistry with the returnees and the coaches. I would like to see some set plays offensively and some basic pics and screens more often.
CNO will blend these guys in to something fun to watch.

I will say that I really wanted him to work, and he didn’t. He didn’t play AAU game and he kept the program clean which is why he failed. He had the most boring style of basketball I have ever watched. I don’t think he ever got a technicaL, and barely argued calls with refs (only time was against Vandy). He won those 20 game seasons when our league was trash and he also played weak out of conference schedules which is why we only made the tourney once. He had a great team at Dayton, and I wish him well. I don’t think he is a bad coach, but he was a terrible fit for Bama.

It was a real shame they had to cancel the tournament in ‘20 due to Covid. That Dayton team would have been a #1 seed, with, an obvious, legitimate chance at a NC. They will, probably, never have that opportunity in our lifetimes again.

The bottom line here is that no coaches since Wimp have been a good fit and most have been a mess overall. They all did one thing or two things right and dropped the ball on everything else.

People like to point to Gottfried because he had a few good years and our one elite 8 run. He was a terrible coach that was carried by his assistants until they got tired of his crap. Rah Rah Scott and TR Dunn had more to do with his early success than anything else. Within two seasons after TR went back to the NBA the wheels were visibly wobbling on the program. He hung around a few more seasons and finished wrecking the overall trajectory of the program. Frankly he destroyed the program. Which was quite an accomplishment after that elite 8 run.

He left some talent for Grant but he had already killed fan interest and left a bitter feeling overall in the admin offices. Grant just couldn't pull the program out of the ditch Gottfried buried it in. CAJ...meh, beyond obvious he just wanted to coach his kid and try out the college game at the same time.

All of this because our AD was spineless or lazy or both and let the players talk him into Hobbs when guys like Huggins would have jumped at the job. An almost 30 year walk in the woods all because of that one abominable hire.

I agree with all this. Hobbs selection was the real beginning down the rat hole. They had legitimate coaches very interested in the job, and choose poorly. Once a program gets down, it is tougher to draw the better coaches.
