"Alabama’s coaches and players know they are better than their record indicates. Anyone who watches them can reach the same conclusion. The Crimson Tide shouldbe good. This team has talent, veteran leadership and balance.

“Bama is a weird team,” said one area scout. “On paper they should be second in the (SEC) West.”

But Alabama can’t hide from the reality of its situation, and it isn’t trying to. The Tide isn’t second in the SEC West — it is sixth, with an 8-13 conference record, and a 23-20 overall mark. Bama has played the seventh-strongest schedule in the nation, and it remains inside the top 50 in the RPI, so its at-large hopes aren’t completely shot yet, but a 5-14 record against the top 50 in the RPI is a major black mark, so this team simply needs to win its last three conference series — vs. Arkansas, at Auburn, vs. Vanderbilt — to have a shot."
