Good morning friends!
I am excited for those of you making the trip. If you’ve not been to Austin, even after the transformation it has gone through (2nd largest concentration of tech companies in the country outside of Silicon Valley (Austin is actually called Silicon Hills now)), it is still a fun and unique city.
I have seen some recommendations for y’all to hit the local BBQ joints, but that makes no sense to me. I lived in Alabama for a couple of years (Huntsville) and it seems to me y’all can get BBQ anywhere in Alabama.
what can’t you get it the Great State of Alabama? Mexican and/or Tex-Mex! So I asked some folks for recommendations to supplement my own and have some ideas for you:
Matt’s El Rancho — the oldest and most renowned Tex-Mex in Austin. Many of the older ones closed due to COVID and Austin just becoming one of the most expensive cities in the US (factoid: based on housing costs relative to income, Austin IS the most expensive city in the US). I digress. Really great food, but good luck avoiding a long wait.
Gloria’s — not so much Mexican as it is South American. But great Margaritas, and really interesting menu, including lobster enchiladas! Trust me — awesome! Easy access in downtown Austin.
Fonda San Miguel — truly authentic Mexican.
ATX Cocina — more upscale authentic Mexican.
for beef lovers, I would recommend getting something like Steak Tampiquena — essentially fajita meet cooked in bell peppers and onions, covered in white cheese. Also, carne asada, a similar dish.
So folks, it should be a great weekend. One of the great things about our country is the ability to travel and visit what may seem like other countries! I am sure you all will love Austin and look forward to return visits.
As for football, yeah, y’all are going to kick our asses. But get your licks in now, we are in the way back!
