Avery Johnson left some talent

I’ve heard that story. We signed a lottery pick this past season too

He recruited a lottery pick the year before to in Primo. Two McDonald's All-Americans this year. aaggietider are you confused? Are you on the right message board? I don't think Bama has ever had a coach recruit on this level before?

Well he needs to recruit guys that fit his system. What good is it to recruit a gunslinger QB and recruit no receivers?

Ok, so this means he has talent. So what is the problem this year?
- Defense, particularly guarding the dribbler(wimp term). Been an issue in many games this year

- Primo left, Burnett hurt, Gurley/Quinerly major issues shooting based on what we expected out of them. The shooting has sucked and this is pretty much the issue. Also primo and Burnett would have been very beneficial for us defensively on top of being our 2 best shooters

- JD not ready to play at the level we needed him to play at.

- leadership

- Oats not figuring out the right buttons to press with this group. Has struggled mightily to get this team to the right place mentally.

As I've mentioned before I am somewhat inclined to give a little bit of a pass on signing high school kids up until this point. Yes he's signed a somewhat unexpected one-and-done in Primo, a top 40 recruit who apparantly can't outplay a white walk-on, and a 2A "star" with one-and-done aspirations as well. But he hasn't signed a complete class (on paper) until this year. My hope is that you sign Hawkins, Rojas, Ambrose-Hylton, and Bediako because they are your best available signees to add depth. If we are to believe the insiders on this board then both Oat's and Bediako had reservations about being a part of last year's class. So why did CNO take him? Could Oats have signed a 6'9" 3 star to shoot threes with marginal rebounding and poor shot blocking ability? If everybody in this up coming class bombs then you absolutely have nobody to blame but Oats. What is of equal importance IMO is for CNO to do a better job of evaluating JUCOs and transfers. I absolutely agree with you though. If your style is going to be so heavily geared towards dribble penetration then you better have 4-6 guards on your team every year that can do that very thing. Bama has 1 on the team this year maybe 2 if you're being nice to Shack.

Agree re: needing enough guards…IMO the Bama staff should be looking to the transfer portal every year to try and add an experienced shooter or two.

Since HS freshmen tend to come in needing skill work, even the best recruits, it makes sense to blend your best HS talent with some more proven floor spacing upper class transfers to maximize the chances to have a well rounded roster.

It won’t always work out (ex. Gurley seemed like a great stretch 4/5 plug-in) but IMO that plan makes good sense.

Losing Burnett to injury really hurt.

He showed he could get more out of Avery's recruits than Avery did, so not sure of your point.
He got more out of Avery’s recruits than he has his own recruits. So not really sure that’s a good or bad thing. He’s the one that recruited Gurley, Gary, Rojas, 22 and Bediako. Maybe Gurley forgot how to shoot. But those other 4 can’t shoot. At no time should their be 4-5 guys on the roster that can’t shoot the 3. And we really have more than that.

Gary was a Johnson recruit. He was in the same signing class as Shack.
