We had a Great season last year! But we really were great because of our two seniors . Now they have left we have a team that who knows will show up! We can beat most any team or we can lose to any team.
A few thoughts.
This is really Coach Oats team. They are the players that he recruited.
We used the same plays as last year. We did not have the same shooters! We did nothing to adjust to our current roster!
Our defense was terrible! Our coach said all the right things all year but imo our defense at the end of the year was still terrible!
Again imo there were many times effort seem to be lacking! Again playing time is earned not given! We did not feel players felt like their playing time could be threatened.
We had multiple players suspended, but not for long did they really get the message intended or just go through the motions?
Again this is my opinion but I think this off season Coach Oaks needs to reevaluate on all is coaching methods! I do feel that he is a very good coach, but I hope and pray that he can change some of his coaching schemes! I hope that he is not hard headed and refuses to take a good look at the total picture!
Thanks for reading this long post!

Good post Mr. Mayor. I'll add that our guys need to hit the weight room. Not just go in and look around, but actually attempt to get stronger. Oats either has to find the players that fit his scheme or change his scheme to fit the players he can get. He also needs to find a "true" pg to play the 1 position.

Last night was game 32 of this season, and in the last 5 minutes Oats was having to tell guys where to go on offense. That reflects a lack of preparation and teaching in practice. The wheels came off after the Houston game. We went 11-12 after that. It's one of the worst coaching jobs I've seen by an Alabama basketball coach in a long time.

And this is extremely concerning because we don't run a complicated offense. We basically run the same high ball screens in our half court all the time.

The difference is senior leadership. We’ve seen the same thing with football.

Young teams are inconsistent. And this Bama bball team is very young.

Also the strategy of ball pressure on D is odd when you know Pippen draws fouls. Better to play softer and contest shots than give them freebies at the line.

It’s tougher to make an 18-20 foot contested shot than an uncontested free throw

I agree with your comments about us being young and the earlier comment about last year we were better because of senior leadership. That’s why I can’t understand folks saying they want JD to go pro or wanting so and so to transfer. Experience matters, talent matters more. We have talent but it needs experience.

That is not coaching. That is on players not doing what they are taught. JQ even said last night that they don't do things defensively they're taught in practice. That's on players that are selfish wanting to do what they want. Most of the team came back from last year and know what to do. Difference is they don't have a leader on the court to demand that standard.

@Harper41 Any ideas who fills the leadership role next season? Do you think it's someone currently on the roster, or potentially any of the incoming guys? Bediako is one the one guy that's shown consistent improvement/development over the course of the season, but I'm not sold if the leadership thing is his personality.

I hope this incoming class is full of ballers, because other than Bediako this team needs a complete overhaul!
Totally disagree I think Gurley coming back is huge for next year's team. Also having Miles, Gary and Holt return would be great. Also would love for Frenchie to hang around and see if we can develop him.

Guys not knowing where they're supposed to be on offense in the 32nd game of the season isn't coaching? We'll have to respectfully disagree on that one.

I think/hope Oats uses this season as his own learning experience and grows from it. It's his team but it wasn't a team that values what he wants them to value and he never could get through to them all. Not sure when he lost them but something disconnected and he didn't recognize it until way too late. The real learning experience here for him.

IMO we wear the portal out filling the roster after our freshman signees and in a sense Oats starts over with a new team.

Quite possibly the worst thing for this team was wining those games early and then beating Baylor. Those wins will get us in the dance almost by themselves but they let some players believe doing their thing was good enough if someone else is picking up their slack.

After 30+ games if you have not learned to play a certain way the coach wants you to play there are several things that can be done!
You sit on the bench till you learn! A Great coach once said “ The bench is the greatest motivator”
The coach who should be the leader and the most knowledgeable basketball person, changes his basketball teaching to fit his players skills! After all he recruited most players them.
There can be much blaming and pointing fingers but that only makes things worse!
This season has almost over. I truly believe that Coach Oats is a quality coach! Learn what went wrong this year, correct it in the off season and make sure things goes as planned next year!

When I got my first ball and goal at the age of six, I spent hours and years shooting free throws and using the board for “put backs” from 2-3 feet. There were several on the team, last night, that didn’t spend enough time practicing those skills.

From what Harper has said Frenchie is beyond a project

I spent last night thinking about this and I realize there have been many disappointing teams thru the years because it is just tuff to stay on top, but after thinking about it I believe that this is my most disappointing Alabama team since the 2000 football team. I realize we have had much worse teams, but I guess the start of the season coupled with the expectations has just disgusted me with this bunch. I would guess we get a 7 seed and get beat by a 10 seed and then it’s off to full time softball.

I would offer that Gottfried's '02/'03 debacle was by the widest margin THE most disappointing Bama team since CM became head coach.

Expectations were in the stratosphere, we were #1 for like two weeks, then we lost to Utah and the wheels fell off at a spectacular pace. #1 to one and done in the SEC tournament and one and done in the NCAA tournament. IIRC that team didn't win a single road game in conference play. If they did it had to have been to whatever the actual worst team in the league was that season.

You may be right about the '02/'03 team, but this year's team did lose on the road to the worst team in the history of the conference (Georgia).

Those are my sentiments as well Dale. It has just been mind numbing to watch this team freefall from the 8-1 start after beating Houston to going 11-12 the rest of the way. We're not playing like a tournament team, and I frankly don't see us winning another game.

Like I said last week and several times. For this team, the season needs to be over. I personally believe this collapse is on the players. This appears to be a team full of selfish players and immature attitude. Not sure what the problem is. But they appear to need to grow up.
I will be glad to see the one more loss and the bad apples go.

Players have mental lapses. You can lead a horse to water but can't force it to drink logic...

You are truly an Oats hater. Do not remember you singing his praises at all during last year’s great run.

I disagree, that’s on the coach. I’m not going to go back and find my posts on this but it’s on here somewhere.

3 things happened at the end of Avery’s tenure that made me change my tune from a coach needs 5 year to thinking Avery has to go.

One was the lack of player development.

The other was while at a game sitting almost right behind the Bama bench. It was late in a close game and everyone sitting around me all heard Avery yelling at the players after a timeout to guard the man in the corner on an inbound play. No one moved to guard the player and he hits a big 3. That let me know the players had tuned him out, I know they could hear him because we all could hear him, they just didn’t listen to him. That’s coaching.

Last thing was they stopped playing hard for him. I’m still a guy that say a coach needs 5 years, but when players stop playing hard for you as a coach, it’s time for you to go.
