I would like to give a huge shoutout to the Bama Medical/Training staff. Coach Jeff Allen and his staff do an amazing job of taking care of all the athletes. My son has attended the Nick Saban football camp since he was in middle school and he has type 1 diabetes. Coach Allen has always done everything he can to make sure my son was looked after and to make my wife and I comfortable with his care during his stay. The staff would always take the time to check on him and ask about his blood sugars and how he was feeling. He was never "babied" but, looked after in a way that kept him healthy but, also encouraged him to make the right choices and do the right things to take care of his condition. This year is his last year to attend and the staff not only continued to check on him about his diabetes, they also had the added task of taking care of his knee that he injured several days before camp. They advised him on which activities to participate in and which ones he should avoid in order for him to get the most out of his time there without injuring his knee worse. They arranged for him, his mother and I to talk to a current player that also has diabetes; to seek out encouragement and advice on how to continue dealing with the disease and still play sports at a high level. They help teach the boys how to take responsibility and grow into young men as much as any position coach on the team. We are extremely lucky to have these men and women at the university that care so much and work so hard to keep our athletes safe and to stand along side them as they recover from their injuries and nurse them back to health. A job truly well done !!!
