Basketball team was tough to watch today. I know it’s easy to get real frustrated with all the new high expectations from this team. You can see some of my posts and see how bothered I was today. I will say this maybe our expectations are all a little high considering what we have on this team. We have proven we can win against some really good teams and in basketball so many good teams lose to bad teams too. I do think we can still do what we did last year, but only worries is that this team just doesn’t have the ability to play defense like the previous team. Also hear me out on this, but just look at our team.
JQ - didn’t get minutes with previous team and expectations of him are high. He’s good, but makes some horrible decisions when it matters.
Gurley - probably a better small school player
JD - expectations alway too high for Alabama HS kid . Has a ton of talent, but doesn’t normally transfer in college. If he stuck around believe he would get better
Bediako - freshman who will get better but def plays like a frehman
Miles - would not get minutes on many power 5 schools, but realize we need him. He just shouldn’t play as much as he does.
Gary - his skills are limited and is still raw, but wouldn’t be bad coming off the bench for a good team like last year.
Shack - love this guy, but needs to be. 2nd or 3rd main guy in a good team. Has gotten better on defense I think.
Ellis - way too streaky. Was hoping like everyone else that he would be a Herb with offense. He’s not. His offense is inconsistent and his defense is no where close to Herb, but whose really is.

Again we are a good team, but when we look bad we are bad. This team hasn’t hit many threes this year and when you don’t have the defense you had last year that can catch up with this type of play. It seems that we need to recruit some “beefy” big guys that can rebound to help. I love our program and where we are and think we will continue to be in the tournament. Hope we can all remember where we were and where we are now. It will continue to get better.
Oh and do wish coach would call timeouts when teams get on a hot streak, but guess he knows what he’s doing. Haha

Not much to argue with here OP…I think Oats is a good, young coach. We are lucky to have him. I think he will continue to grow and we will have good teams to come. But, this team has limitations. I hope Oats does like Saban and has other coaches come in the off-season to offer constructive evaluations.

I wish Oates would add some full court packages for THIS team. I thought Mizzou looked a little "tubby" at many positions. It seems that we allow physical teams to dictate tempo to us and when THIS team gets into a half court game, we oftentimes get ground up like hamburger meat!

Gotta make those tubby bigs change ends and play in transition defense.

We did not dictate anything today.

We are super aggressive on defense and can’t keep anybody in front of us. Not convinced more pressure is the answer. But trying something won’t hurt.

Hard to accurately assess year 3 of CNO with so many bandaids. Biggest recruiting accomplishment in year one was convincing Jones and Petty to return. Biggest in year two was convincing Shack to return. Getting JD and Bediako was nice for this year but huge for next year and so on much like signing JQ two years ago was huge for this season. This year's highly ranked class will hopefully propel Bama basketball going forward and reduce the need for so many bandaids moving forward. I am afraid that the type of basketball that Bama fan's are wanting to consistantly see is still 2 years away from existing.

Sitting back and allowing these physical teams to dictate tempo to us has proven, with THIS team, to not be a good approach.

Our half court defense HAS BEEN, at times, very good. For the majority of the time, it is a bit passive and lazy.

Passive? Our 5 will switch on to the point guard and be pressuring him as hard as he can. That’s not passive. And it’s not smart either.

People need to be realistic about our ceiling in basketball. It’s a lot lower than most think.
I agree with our fans becoming more realistic right now. I disagree about this program's ceiling. IMO we are two years away from being a serious contender. Until then let's just get to the tourny and have fun.

This team is at best 10-8 in the SEC this season. Lots of big talk about the next few years, but we lose JQ and Shack. The COVID year run really has set some expectations that aren’t realistic.

The ceiling has always been limited for Tide basketball. Even when we have had really good teams.

In other basketball news, Miami won at Duke today. They are 13-3 and 5-0 in the ACC so far. At that time that felt like a layup against a middling ACC team. It may end up our second best win after Gonzaga.

We just got manhandled physically.

Definitely been a passive, lazy unit this year. Nate agrees with me:

“If we’re gonna have any shot of winning that [Auburn] game Tuesday night, we’re gonna have to completely turn our defensive intensity around,” coach Nate Oats said. “Or we got no shot of winning that game.”

Defensive intensity and being aggressive aren’t the same thing. I know people think they are, but they aren’t. Some of the most intense teams alive on defense are pack line guys that don’t pressure anywhere.

I understand it pretty well. I played college hoops way way back in the day.

Haha. That’s not the bar for understanding things. Tons of people played but don’t understand the game. I love that one the most. I played college ball so I understand more than you. Lots of guys that were really good, didn’t exactly have to understand everything to succeed.

Thank you for educating me. Have a good day there.
