This is what keeps us outside the top 5. Our guards can compete with anyone but our bigs always look elementary against other teams. We’ve got to get ATHLETIC bigs who can bang down low.

This has been an issue for many years. I know Bedi is only a freshman but not sure if he is what we need down low.

Proud of the effort tonight against Auburn.

Dead on. Really thought Gurley would be more. We have a French 6’11” athletic freak who for some inexplicable reason isn’t good

I thought our bigs were suppose to be stepping out drawing people like Kessler away from the basket and making him guard the perimeter. That’s obviously not the case but I thought that was the idea with Oats system?

Jabari Smith on this Bama team would be a fun game to watch. He's the unicorn 6'10"+ player than can legit shoot it from outside and bang around under the rim.

IMO Oats doesn't need a true big for most games. At least not one that is limited to being inside the free throw line unless he's just a monster at rebounding. He needs a couple of slash players than can play anything from 3 to 5 and hit shots. We sort of had that last season though only Herb really got it done consistently enough to fill the role.

Next season should be a very different team so we'll get to see what Oats can do with a new lineup that's maybe better catered to his offense. We basically get a new lineup of signees with a center, two forwards, and two guards. And I'd bet on at least two from the portal.

I have a hard time criticizing our bigs tonight against Kessler and Jabari. Is there a better 1-2 punch at those positions in the country? NBA 1st overall pick and another first round pick.
In the game in T-town I thought Oats had a great strategy and fouled out Kessler. We tried it again and Kessler did get an early foul but the refs were swallowing their whistles a lot otherwise.
Bediako again came out gunshy, missing two layups early (should have dunked one). I thought he had a nice 2nd half with 3 blocks, a few boards and at least competed with their big guys.
Gurley is the obvious guy to me to play more minutes and be a big man that is a shooter in the mold of what we hope for in the Oats O. He's got a nice stroke. Seems like he's playing harder on D. He's also only 6'8'' and hard for him to stop either of Aubs bigs.
Gurley is a 6'6'' small forward who can't shoot, but we ask him to play the 4 and 5 and he hustles his butt off.
Of course Rojas is just a banger with several limitations. Nice to see him hit a few shots.
I think Bediako shows promise and will get better in seasons to come. He needs to eat more biscuits n gravy. He'll never be a shooter, but he's a mobile 7-footer that can play at our fast pace and shown flashes of dunking/shot blocking. Obviously needs to become a more tenacious rebounder.
Of course the other best big man in the country rolls in this Saturday in Oscar Tshiebwe. We'll have our hands full once again, but we'll be in Coleman and I think we'll have a good showing.

Didn't get to see any of the game last evening, but we play very timid underneath the basket. Our Bigs aren't an offensive threat. In order to play in Oats system and draw the defense we have to have someone that knows how to finish under the basket and at least hit mid-range from 12 feet away to be a threat. Otherwise, the defense can camp in the lane and collect our misses. Sometimes we've been jacking up 3s while our big man is out around three FT line and the results are ending up in the hands of the defenders. Just a casual observation.

He needs to eat and hit the weights
His hands are so weak in the paint .. constantly gets stripped

he did step up in the second half…played more aggressively

I think the team is missing a Herb, Petty, Primo and Reese more than a true big man.
Just guessing but more was expected from Tchikou to replace Reese and Gurley to replace Bruner while developing Bediako into a similar player.

Primo to the NBA and Burnett injured were unexpected imo.

Shack and Quinerly had bad games last year too but that was filled by Primo, Petty, Herb, and Ellis. Now it's filled with Miles? Holt? Davison?

The depth is not even comparable and Davison is being forced into uncomfortable situations too soon while Primo was protected last year.

We can't be great every year and we're pretty damn good considering we replaced half the roster. This is more of a bad luck year because there appeared to be a replacement plan.

If this is Oats suck year, he has potential.

Great post. How many years have we already been on the wrong side of the bubble by now? This is oats’ suck year? I’ll take it!

I think there is a focus on the 4 and 5 because we seem to be lacking in rebounding competitiveness on a surface level eye test. We also aren't making a lot of our baskets that we made last year. If you make your shots, you don't need to rebound, but if don't you have to have some muscle underneath to put it back.

This team will always need a Donta Hall type guy. Don’t care about shooting 3s but need a shot blocking dunking machine who can keep
Them off offensive boards.

Alabama can play with just about any team in the country except Auburn. I will be very surprised if Auburn loses another game. They will more than likely win the national championship. Comparing our bigs to theirs isn't fair as Swoosh said. They have a great coach, elite guards, elite bigs and depth. All the components you need to win a championship. The only thing I will take as solace is maybe we will finally get a good arena.
