Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State

If you don't have people on your staff that want to become head coaches and the other people do not want as their head coaches, the best you can hope to do is play in the NIT.

If a coach takes a Georgia Southern or Arkansas State to the NCAA and can pull an upset, he now gets a $2. mil contract and is set for life. Coach Oats will have no problem finding replacements. Somewhere out there is a High School Head Coach, teaching math classes that will want a chance. A good head coach has a list of applicants sitting in his top desk drawer. Win four more games and the line to Tuscaloosa will be long.

Do other basketball staffs lose two guys in the same year like this? Has Bruce Pearl ever had anyone under him become a head coach?
When you have sustained success, yes you can see assistants leave for sure. 2 in a year is uncommon. Great for Henry and Hodgson, but this will be a huge off-season for Oats.

I have always said, “if nobody else wants your coaches, then maybe you should ask yourself why do you want them.”

It may well be Oats biggest recruiting battle to find good assistants to keep the momentum moving. In football there's a fairly established ecosystem that generally flows up to the big programs and eventually into head coaching jobs. Basketball seems a little more scattered so I'm a little anxious on how this will end up.

It seems he has leaned heavily on Hodgson for recruiting and Henry for getting the defensive plans and has had them since he started in T-Town. So it will be interesting to see if he can find another defense guy and a recruiter that can keep recruiting rolling. The way some talk this is about the equivalent of a Saban offseason where he is hiring like 8 coaches, both coordinators, and a dozen or more support staff to replace folks leaving all while holding on to a top recruiting class.

Does anyone have a sense on whether Oats is already locked in on some names or will this turn into a wild resume fest?

Will we lose any recruits from these guys leaving?

Obviously that’s understood. I just don’t remember times where a basketball team lost two in the same season, which was the point of my post.

This is 2/3's of our assistants. These guys have done a great job and l wish them well. They will not be easily replaced.

Henry was in charge of our great defense and was a good recruiter.

Hodgson worked with our big men, Angry Chuck and Pringle have greatly improved under him. He is a great recruiter. He has been with Oates a long time.

Hope this does not affect any of our recruits. l don't think it will affect the team for the next two weeks.
