Dear Editor: How often I think of the day I discovered my husband had lost his prized possession, his Alabama 1961 National Championship ring. There weren't many of them, so I was told. Of course, Coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant had one and Mal Moore owned one. There were about four other coaches that owned that exact ring.
It was a rare occasion when the ring came off my husband's finger. The only time I recall the ring's removal was when he washed his hands.
After retirement, sadly, my husband was showing signs of Alzheimer's disease. He would work with the Tide Pride program part-time. He loved Alabama football and the Alabama fans. It was his life.
Sometime later, I noticed his ring was missing. We turned everything in our house upside down and the ring was not there. I know he washed his hands, but where?
Someone found that large, 1961 Alabama National Championship ring with Dude Hennesseey's name engraved on it and only the good Lord knows who found it. They kept it or sold it. The losers are still weeping.
