66 Alabama Student-Athletes Earn Place on SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll
The Tide’s total includes 24 women’s swimmers and divers, 19 men’s swimmers and divers, 12 gymnasts, six women’s basketball players and four men’s basketball players
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama had 66 student-athletes earn a place on the Southeastern Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced this week. The Crimson Tide’s total was third, trailing only Georgia and South Carolina, which both count an extra sport, equestrian, in their totals.
A student-athlete must be a sophomore or better in academic standing to earn the honor. Both the Tide’s women’s swimming and diving team (24) and gymnastics team (12) saw all of their upperclassmen earn the honor. Three teams, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving and gymnastics, led the SEC in their respective sports while the Tide was second among women’s basketball squads.
Four men's basketball players earned the honor, including Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Levi Randolph who is pursuing a master’s degree in marketing. Retin Obasohan (finance), Dakota Slaughter (marketing) and Jimmie Taylor (criminal justice) also earned the honor.
The women’s basketball squad had the second most honors among SEC squads this season with seven, led by Briana Hutchen who is pursuing a master’s degree in sport management. Oceana Hamilton (advertising), Breanna Hayden (exercise science), Nikki Hegstetter (marketing), Karyla Middlebrook (management), Sharin Rivers (exercise science) and Ashley Williams (criminal justice) also earned the honor.
The Crimson Tide's 2015 SEC Champion gymnastics team saw an SEC-best 12 gymnasts make the team, led by 2014 and 2015 NCAA Elite 89 Award recipient Lauren Beers (exercise science) and All-America Kayla Williams who is pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. The gymnastics team also saw Katie Bailey (public relations), Kaitlyn Clark (exercise science), Hunter Dennis (general studies), Lora Leigh Frost (health studies), Amanda Jetter (human development & family studies), Keely McNeer (chemical engineering), Dominique Pegg (exercise science), Mary Lillian Sanders (history), Aja Sims (exercise science) and Carley Sims (advertising) also earned the honor.
A total of 19 members of the men's swimming and diving team earned the accolade, including Taylor Charles (pre-medical), Szymmy Day (biology), Phillip Deaton (chemical engineering), Clark Garner (management), Kristian Gkolomeev (human performance exercise science), Jacob Kelsoe (marketing), Carl Madden (history), Dylan Marin (biology), Anton McKee (management information sciences), Michael Messuri (restaurant/hospitality management), Connor Oslin (pre-medical), Abbas Qali (human performance exercise science), Carlo Rezzonico (economics), Pavel Romanov (economics), Brent Sagert (electrical engineering), Kyle Simpson (biology), Hunter Smith (communication studies), Brett Walsh (civil engineering) and Brian Westlake (finance).

To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The winter list honors those student-athletes that participate in men's and women's basketball, gymnastics and men's and women's swimming and diving as well as equestrian and rifle.
