I am sure you gave a parting breakdown months ago as this team faltered against the Irish, but through possibly clearer eyes what do you see? @Harper41 ??

One thing I noticed is Oats and staff will not be complacent or keep complacent players. Not saying he pushed some guys out, but they were not going to play if they came back in the same way they played last season.

As far as the state of the program, you’re looking at a perennial top 4 team talent wise in the SEC basically every season. Does that always translate to incredible seasons. No. What is encouraging is the message Oats is sending to the players that he wants consistency in effort and motivation. Oats’ system works if you have unselfish players and guys who work hard. That is why missing a guy like Herb and his leadership last season hurt big time. As long as Oats is HC, this program is in a great spot in recruiting and on court success. Consistency is the key.

One thing is clear to me about Nate Oats, he is going to recruit really good players that fit his scheme and are willing to play hard hat defense.
I think his intensity rubs off on the players and I for one can see the culture of the basketball program going way up from where we were before CNO came aboard.
I think we have a really good staff and the program has the new arena to look forward to.
Lots of good things happening for Bama Mens BB.

we got more talent on our team than i can remember in years. we are good enough to be a top 10 team if things go right. but every game we lose the know-it-alls will be out in full force.

Don't worry about those guys, the basketball program is on an upward trend and that can't be denied!

With what do we attribute Holt's departure? Seems like the kind of guy you would want to keep around assuming he wanted to stay.

I really don't know the main issue, but I know after the season that CNO wanted all players buying in to the team standards and he could have been in the wrong group of guys that needed to transfer.
Better question for Harper.

More talent ahead of him coming in and returning basically
This is one thing that sort of frustrates me about basketball. Who says more talent is ahead of him? Recruiting services? Not necessarily disagreeing with you but having a season in the system gives him an advantage over what 30-40% of the guys coming in and here we are short a scholarship player too. No way he automatically drops to 13th best player on the team.

I’ve seen him live multiple times and can see why he transferred honestly. No knocking the kid, but you can just see he’s a step behind the guys ahead of him at his position. Plus there were some ofd off the court stuff that set him back too.

I liked the effort he gave when he played but I think he may have had more airballs than makes

As a freshman Herb Jones avg 4.2 points and 3.5 reb a game in 21 minutes. Holt avg .7 points and 1.6 reb in 7 minutes last season.
I know it seems like I am wanting to die in this hill but I don't. If Oats shows he can bring in 4-5 top notch guys every season and get them to gel then I'll shut up and not say a word. I really dislike the current state of college hoops but I suppose this is the way it's going to be going forward.

As far as raw talent, this team is loaded. Still we only have four guys that have ever played for Oates on the team along with one returnee who was injured last year. Seven of the twelve players are new, but with all this talent l think Oates can bring them together.

l think the overseas trip this month will help this team mesh. Looking forward to a great season. RTR
