Day 23 - August 25

Final Entry of fall camp - Alabama Crimson Tide Football superlatives and game-by-game predictions

As we turn the page on fall camp for Alabama and head into Louisville week, I wanted to close my fall camp journal out with some superlatives which encompass both the offense and defense side of the football for Alabama.

Offensive player of the year: QB Tua Tagovailoa

Las Vegas just placed the sophomore quarterback who has yet to start a college football game at 4/1 odds on winner to bring Alabama the Heisman Trophy. Tagovailoa has looked stellar, to say the least during fall camp and while Nick Saban has yet to name the starting quarterback, his play on the field should speak for itself over the first few weeks of the season, especially with the arsenal of weapons the Crimson Tide has returning at receiver and at the running back position. Take the over on a 3,000-yard and 30 touchdown season from the left-handed phenom.

Defensive player of the year: DL Raekwon Davis

Standing 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds, Raekwon Davis is the most seasoned pass-rusher Alabama has returning to the 2018 season and from what we’ve seen in August, he looks like a first-round draft pick. The massive defensive end recorded 69 tackles on the team during his sophomore season in 2017 with 8.5 quarterback sacks and even recorded an interception against Georgia in the National Title game. Davis will be a nightmare for opposing linemen all season long and if Davis doesn’t get to the quarterback, his counterpart Isiah Buggs will.

Breakout pick, offensive: WR Jerry Jeudy

Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy? Is Jeudy, a 6-foot-1, 187-pound receiver out of Deerfield Beach, Florida the next receiver from Alabama with NFL type talent? Oh yeah, Jeudy is a do it all receiver that should be a 50-45 reception type guy with incredible playmaking ability. Last season he caught for just 264-yards off 14 receptions and was the A-Day MVP.

Breakout pick, defense: DB Deionte Thompson

Alabama has to replace their entire defensive secondary including first-round pick Minkah Fitzpatrick. While a lot of question marks remain regarding just who will start and where for Alabama’s secondary until as we inch closer towards Louisville, 6-foot-2, 196-pound Deionte Thompson is primed to be one of the best safeties in the Country. He played in every game last season as a sophomore and recorded 25 tackles and had a few big plays in the National Title game against Georgia. Thompson should be both a ball hawk and serve as the team’s hardest hitting defensive back in 2018.

Rookie of the year, offense: WR Jaylen Waddle

The 5-foot-10, 177-pound true freshman out of Houston, Texas was a rivals.com Five-star coming into camp and has been a problem for defensive backs all fall camp. Waddle has electric speed, playmaking ability, runs his routes with detailed precision, and can cut on a dime, and hauled in a few touchdown passes during Alabama’s second scrimmage. The more Alabama gets him the football, the better.

Rookie of the year, defense: OLB Eyabi Anoma

Picking a freshman that will contribute in year one for Alabama on defense is not an easy task, but look for 6-foot-5, 245-pound Eyabi Anoma out of Baltimore, Maryland to see plenty of time this season. The rivals.com Five-star has continued to make good progress during fall camp and while he will not be a starter, his name should be called on to step onto the field as soon as week one. Anoma passes the eyeball test, has great athleticism, and works with Alabama defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi every day, expect good things.

Assistant Coach of the Year: Mike Locksley, OC
Locksley has proven himself to be a high quality assistant coach at Alabama and Nick Saban has already promoted him twice from Offensive Analyst to Receivers Coach to Offensive Coordinator in just three seasons. When we heard Locksley speak during media day, its easy to see his high IQ, his experience, and love for the game, and beyond that, he’s the best recruiter in the Nation. With the talent that Locksley has across the board on offense, expect his name to be a hot commodity for a head coaching position somewhere else following the season.

Bold prediction offense: Damien Harris and Najee Harris combine for 2,000-yards

Maybe it’s not that bold of a pick, but you have to really love this combination at running back at Alabama. Damien is on pace to be Alabama’s first back to rush for a 1,000-yards in three consecutive seasons and Najee at 6-foot-2, 230-pounds looks to be Alabama’s next big time NFL back and he’s just a sophomore. Of course, don’t forget about Joshua Jacobs and Brian Robinson, likely the second best running back tandem in college football. Yeah, Alabama is still Running Back U.

Bold prediction defense: Dylan Moses outperforms Mack Wilson as the team’s top inside backer

He might only be a sophomore, but 6-foot-2, 233-pound inside linebacker Dylan Moses speaks and acts like a veteran going into the 2018 season. Wearing number 32, he shows flashes of former Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans at practice and while Mack Wilson will be the signal caller, Moses at least in my opinion seems to have that nose for the ball, it factor to speak, and likely the player that leads the Crimson Tide in tackles this season. As a freshman in 2017, Moses recorded 11 tackles against Mercer and then followed that up with 10 tackles against Auburn, he finished with 30 tackles.

Day 16 - August 18

Entry No. 15 - 5 Question Marks Heading Into Scrimmage Number Two

Alabama will hold their second scrimmage of fall camp today at Bryant Denny Stadium (rain is expected) but that should not change the Tide from hitting the field in mid August as they continue to prepare for Louisville on September 1.

Here are a few question marks going into today’s scrimmage.

1. Will Tua Tagovailoa continue to distance himself in the quarterback race? Last weekend, Tagovailoa reportedly threw four touchdown passes to Jalen Hurts’ three interceptions. With that said, will Nick Saban have further comments on the quarterback battle or will he continue to say the starting position at quarterback is to be determined and that both quarterbacks will be used?

2. With Najee Harris out with an ankle injury, what will we see from Brian Robinson and Joshua Jacobs? Each running back which you could now consider the number two back behind senior Damien Harris has looked stellar as of late, the question is, will either Robinson or Jacobs make a big time jump in the depth chart with more reps today? Seems like these two are playing at a very high level.

3. Kicking game, as Tony pointed out in his Saturday story: What will shake out for Alabama in regards to the starting kicker position? Will you have grad transfer Austin Jones or the redshirt freshman Joesph Bulovas emerge as the starter, or will Saban just use both depending on the situation and distance?

4. What will we see from the secondary? I mean last weekend they allowed four touchdowns, but also came up with three interceptions and Saban has said besides Xavier McKinney and Trevon Diggs that everyone else in the unit has been up and down. Which defensive backs will rise up today?

5. Middle backer watch: Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses have looked very impressive during fall camp, but what about the two’s and three’s from this unit? Lot of question marks still surrounding the depth at a vital position. Paging Chris Allen and true freshmen Jaylen Moody along with Ale Kaho.

Day 13 - August 15 (2nd Edition of my HOT 11)

Entry No. 14

No. 32 Damien Harris - Running Back - Senior

The more and more I see of Damien Harris, the more and more I feel he might be the most underrated running back that Alabama has had entering the season. Everyone is excited to see the “next” running back, but Harris looks to be a man among boys, even at the college level and has worked on his speed, upfield cutting ability, and is no doubt due for a thousand yard season, possibly much more. Feed the man.

No. 92 Quinnen Williams - Defensive Lineman - RS - Sophomore

The media spoke with big Raekwon Davis today and Davis was very complimentary of Williams. “That is a guy that can do anything,” said Davis. “He’s a freak on the field.” Williams has some big shoes to fill in replacing Da’Ron Payne, but he continues to receive high praise. “He is one of the guys that I am proud of,” said Saban following Alabama’s first scrimmage. “He has developed and what he’s grown in, improving himself physically, having a lot of maturity, plays with a lot of effort, smart player, and I think he is one of our more productive guys right now.”

No. 14. Deionte Thompson - Defensive Back - Junior

The leader of the defensive secondary. We got a few tastes of his ability last year during the National Championship and he looks the part, is the part, and he’s the hardest hitter in the secondary. He’s more of a ball hawk and you would think he is due for a six to seven interception type season.

No. 8. Joshua Jacobs - Running Back - Junior

100% healthy and that is dangerous for opposing defenses. He’s looking similar to a bowling ball running down field with moves side to side like a gazelle. Jacobs seems hungry for the football, I think he just needs an open field and it’s over. It might be wise to get him on your college fantasy football team while you can. “He’s absolutely 100%,” said Saban. “Very explosive, quick, fast, no issues, he’s been able to take all the reps and has fared very well.”

No. 4. Chris Allen - Linebacker - Sophomore

Alabama really likes what they have in Allen at 6-foot-4 and 242-pounds as he is very versatile showing he can play with the outside linebackers and is currently working with the middle backers because of a depth issue. Allen is going to play plenty this year and should eventually rise to be one of Alabama’s star-studded linebackers.

No. 58. Christian Barmore - Defensive Lineman - Freshman

True freshman Christian Barmore has looked stellar to put it simply. This is from Raekwon Davis on Wednesday, “He’s going to be something great. He has a great work ethic and came into camp with great technique and he’s going to have a great role on the team.” When Barmore gets his named called to play this year, he’ll be ready.

No. 2. Patrick Surtain II - Defensive Back - Freshman

He has that “it” factor and he has a long and lanky range which should make him a problem for receivers when he’s on the field. He has good acceleration, but he’s still learning the part and while he will likely step on the field in some capacity this season, he’s a long ways from being an instant impact player. That is not at all a knock on him because you can see it from watching him at practice, he’s going to be a big time player with a future in the NFL.

No. 41 Jaylen Moody - Linebacker - Freshmen

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound freshman linebacker looks to be a star in the making. He’s made some plays during Saturday’s scrimmage and looks like he could step on the field sooner than later. Stay tuned as we are hearing great things on Moody.

Day 10 - August 12

Entry No. 13 - 10 Things We Learned from Alabama's first scrimmage

1. No quarterback has been named

2. Learned that Tua threw four touchdowns and Jalen threw three interceptions

3. Former Alabama DB Will Lowery would be shocked if Tua does not start

4. Injury Report, Jamey Mosley and Daniel Wright with shoulder issues

5. Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney looked good in secondary

6. Freshman Phidarian Mathis making waves, Quinnen Williams is doing very well according to Nick Saban

7. Austin Jones hit two field goals and Bulovas missed two

8. Jaylen Waddle returned punts

9. Jerry Jeudy was turning heads | More

10. First sighting of Ale Kao | More

Day 9 - August 11

Entry No 12 - Alabama once again has the most talented backfield in college football

The talk that has surrounded Alabama football all summer is the quarterback situation and while that will linger in the headlines until kickoff, the one thing we do know is that Alabama once again has the most talented backfield in the Country.

Damien Harris returns for his senior season after many expected him to forgo his senior season to head to the NFL. Harris has said many times that he loves Tuscaloosa, the college experience, and he has a chance this year to be Alabama’s first ever back to rush for 1,000-yards in three consecutive seasons. Harris at 5-foot-11, 215 pounds ran for 1,040-yards with two touchdowns as a sophomore in 2016 and last season ran for 1,000-yards with 11 touchdowns off 135-carries (7.4 average).

In the past, many have questioned Harris’ breakaway speed, Alabama released a highlight of him yesterday that showed unmatched speed from Harris, a clip really that should send shivers down Louisville Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder’s spine.

Behind Harris is Najee Harris (no relation) and Harris a Rivals.com Five-star will be a sophomore checking in at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds. Since the arrival of Harris, he’s been yoked, not fat, and he’s a very hard work with a lot of ability, maybe enough talent to be one of the best backs in college football this year. Last season as a true freshman, Harris rushed for 370-yards on 61-carries (6.1 average) with three touchdowns and we’ve continued to see from him a strong ability to break away from defenders because of his power and he’s improved on his pass protection skills according to offensive coordinator Mike Locksley year over year.

Joshua Jacobs is 100% full go according to Nick Saban. Jacobs dealt with a nagging ankle injury all last season that required surgery following the national championship game. Jacobs at 5-foot-10 and 216-pounds is a running back that has it all, speed, power, burst, and so dangerous in the open field. We’ve already seen him make a few cuts on the field that would make you say wow.

Next up is Tuscaloosa native Brian Robinson who 6-foot-1, 221 pounds and rumored to be the fastest back on the team. He looks absolutely shredded and he really shined in the spring game totaling 89-yards with one touchdown. Robinson has that something special, just wait until his name is called, he’ll blow the roof off or at least has that capability.

Jerome Ford is the new addition to the team as a true freshman and senior running back Damien Harris said he’s taking everything in and called him an open book. Ford is listed at 5-foot-11 and 206-pounds and his high school highlight tape features a ton of big plays displaying game-changing speed.

Day 7 - August 9

Entry No. 11 - The 3-2-1, youthful Alabama still dangerous as ever

Three Things We’ve Learned

1. Sophomores aplenty

Alabama played over 15 true freshmen last season and while the sophomore is short for sophomoric, this talented class already features some of the best players in the Country that will start in 2018 for Alabama. Second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has looked polished and is 100% after his spring hand injury, in-fact Las Vegas has dubbed Tagovailoa with odds of -250 (71.4%) to be the starter against Louisville on September 1.

Other sophomore starters for Alabama could include DeVonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, and Henry Ruggs, all which saw a significant time at receiver as true freshmen. On the right side of the offensive line, Jedrick Wills looks to be pushing for the starting spot at right guard and Alex Leatherwood the same at right tackle. That is six offensive starters (could be) that are just second-year players.

On the defensive side of the football, Quinnen Williams is a red-shirt sophomore taking over for first-round draft pick Da’Ron Payne, Dylan Moses will start at the Will position at linebacker, and Xavier McKinney is pushing to start at strong safety. In total, Alabama could start nine sophomores and remember, the Crimson Tide will likely start a red-shirt kicker in Joseph Bulovas along with true freshman punter Skyler Delong.

2. The strength of the team is at Running Back

While all the noise has been focused on the quarterback position, Alabama has been a program primed off their power run game and dominate running backs, this year, Alabama has four running backs that could likely make a push for the starting position anywhere in the Nation, that is how deep the backfield is.

Damien Harris enters his senior year trying to be Alabama’s first ever back to rush for 1,000-yards in three consecutive seasons, Sophomore Najee Harris at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds has the makings to be Alabama’s next big-time back and same can be said for Brian Robinson who’s also a sophomore at 6-foot-1, 221 pounds. Junior Joshua Jacobs is 100% healthy according to Saban in a recent press conference, so as you can see, the depth and quality of depth is unmatched in the backfield.

3. Veteran leadership will hold the rope

By the time Alabama’s junior or seniors hit their final fall camp, their men, some have already graduated, some are future first-round draft picks, and this year leadership will come from senior Ross Pierschbacher who moved from left guard to center this season along with Lester Cotton, another senior lineman who will take over that guard position. Pierschbacher is 6-foot-4, 309 and Cotton is 6-foot-4, 325.

Obviously, the spokesman of the offense is Damien Harris at running back, one of the finest individuals you’ll hear speak to the media this season. On the defensive side of the football, it appears to be Anfernee Jennings at 6-foot-3, 266 and Christian Miller at 6-foot-4, 244, two outside linebackers who have emerged as the alpha dogs, along withsecond-yearr starter at defensive end Isaiah Buggs 6-foot-5, 286. The front seven at Alabama should not see any drop off in 2018.

Two Question Marks

1. What to make of the defensive secondary?

Everyone is new in the secondary at Alabama, the Crimson Tide even have a new secondary coach in Karl Scott who came in from Texas Tech. Shyheim Carter who is a junior looks to have really stepped up during fall camp at corner and at the other side will likely be Trevon Diggs, now in his third year.

Alabama also has some young freshman talent that could have their name called such as Patrick Surtain, Josh Jobe, and Jaylyn Armour-Davis. At strong safety, Xavier McKinney is just a sophomore and Deionte Thompson is the big hitter and play-maker at free safety, Alabama fans got a taste of his talent last season during the National Championship game against Georgia

2. Has the quarterback situation affected the team?

It really does not seem like it in the slightest. An interesting thing happened on Tuesday when a reporter asked Ross Pierschbacher about a team cleansing the team had following Jalen’s comments, Pierschbacher acknowledged that this did in fact happened, but in the next interview, Alabama running back Damien Harris said he had no idea what the reporter was talking about.
Whatever shakes out at quarterback it likely will not matter against Louisville where Las Vegas has Alabama as a four-touchdown favorite. Anything can happen, I get that, but stopping this offensive attack is going to be a tall task for every opponent this season, no matter if their in shotgun, goal-line, or even wildcat

One Prediction

1. Tua Tagovailoa starts against Louisville. If this indeed does happen, I then predict Jalen will transfer out in December. What happens between then in this scenario is anyone’s best guess.

Day 6 - August 8

Entry No. 10

As mentioned in entry No. 10, I wanted to post a video of Christian Barmore. At 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds, he really moves well. I was also able to get some footage of Cameron Latu and plan to get more of him.

More freshmen videos here

Day 5 - August 7

Entry No. 9

Watched the defensive linemen for the majority of the practice and it's clear Isaiah Buggs is hungry. As he walked up to a sled drill, he just yelled at the top of his lungs, and then jumped up first in line and smashed the sled. Raekwon Davis followed suit and then Quinnen Williams. I am not sure what to expect out of Williams this season, IMO there is a big difference talent wise between him and Da'Ron Payne. I've really liked what I've seen from Christian Barmore as a true freshman, he moves really well. I plan to have some highlights of him posted on Wednesday.

Day 4 - August 6

Entry No. 8 - Defensive-minded

Day three of fall camp and today, it was hot as all hell in Tuscaloosa. Just one of those days that you cannot beat the heat and you sweat with each step you take outside. That of course, did not stop the Crimson Tide from putting in work to start the week. I spent the majority of the time with the outside linebackers and I’ll never get tired of watching Alabama Defensive Coordinator Tosh Lupoi coach his players. Never. He has so much energy and is so gifted in his “Craft” that it’s impossible for the outside linebackers not to succeed each day, each play, etc.

ICYMI: Highlights from Day 3 | Monday Insider Report

It was great to see a healthy Anfernee Jennings, he’s clearly one of the alpha’s out there and he along with Christian Miller should be a very dangerous combo. That goes without saying I guess, but the talent and experience that those two bring to the table is what is going to have Alabama’s defense getting to the quarterback often. Three younger outside linebackers really stood out, Jarez Parks, Cameron Latu, and Eyabi Anoma. Watching these three up close, Alabama has some great up and coming talent.

Parks has great footwork and I remember commenting something similar during spring ball. Latu at 6-foot-5 and 246 and Anoma at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds do not move as well as Parks through drills but don’t look too far off. As mentioned in the insider report by Tony, Ben Davis was seen repping with the outside linebackers today and gained some compliments from Lupoi while I was around.

Chris Allen was working with the inside linebackers and it’s clear he’s a good enough athlete to play both outside and inside. Saw him pick a ball for the scoop and score and it looked fluid.

Watched the defensive backs for a few minutes and was just blown away with Patrick Surtain’s acceleration. Can’t wait to watch him more.

Watched the defensive lineman and saw JC transfer Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore for the first time, not sure what to make out of Musike quite yet, need more of a sample size. Barmore had some good burst and hit the bags well. Still to be determined on both of those guys for now.

Day 3 - August 5 (1st Edition of my HOT 11)

Entry No. 7

Here is my Hot 11 after two practices. I’ll do this every once in a while, all feedback welcomed. Some players could be on the hot 11 every week, but I like to spread it around and talk about a few players we might not have talked about otherwise.

No. 24 - Brian Robinson - Running Back - Sophomore
Notes: While all the running backs could be considered the “man” or the “star” Robinson just needs that opportunity to showcase how special he can be. I think he and Najee are very similar, but we heard that he’s the fastest running back on the team by a source.

No. 36 - Markail Benton - Linebacker - RS-Freshman
Notes: Everyone is expecting him to make a splash this year including Nick Saban who mentioned that in a recent press conference. At 6-foot-2 and 231 pounds Benton has looked very capable at the inside linebackers.

No. 17 - Jaylen Waddle - Receiver - Freshman
Notes: What is there not to like about this young man? Speed, acceleration, quick bursts, and you can tell why Alabama was so excited to get him to Tuscaloosa. He’ll be a nightmare to cover. Highlights here

No. 13 - Tua Tagovailoa - Quarterback - Sophomore
Notes: Has continued to show improvement and continues to look like one of the best quarterbacks in college football. He’s handled this whole quarterback thing well and is just a go with the flow type guy, that has clearly worked on his legs in the off-season. Anyone see his thighs???

No. 32 - Dylan Moses - Linebacker - Sophomore
Notes: Had the honor and privilege to speak with him one on one on Saturday during media day and was blown away with this intellect and what he had to say about how much he learned last year. He’s going to be extremely special, Alabama is lucky to have him.

No. 6 - DeVonta Smith - Receiver - Sophomore
Notes: Smith, Henry Ruggs, and Jerry Jeudy honestly look like juniors going into bowl games rather than looking like incoming sophomores. Just a seasoned group. Smith aka Smitty does all those little things right and I’ve yet to see him drop a pass, a lot of high focus from him.

No. 5 - Shyheim Carter - Defensive Back - Junior
Notes: Everyone has been talking about his play on Saturday recording two picks off the quarterbacks. The 6-foot-0, 195-pound corner needs to step up and looks like he’s taking advantage of the open opportunity at corner.

No. 66 - Lester Cotton - Offensive Guard - Senior
Notes: Why does no one talk about Cotton? At 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds Cotton is a veteran that keeps his head down and grinds it out, he really impresses me each and every-time I see the offensive linemen.

No. 44 - Kedrick James - Tight End - Sophomore
Notes: Baller alert. At 6-foot-5, 263 pounds James I feel is someone who’s going to make some big plays when his number is called. He can move very well, is very athletic going out for passes, and is diesel, looks like a grown a** man.

No. 4 - Jerry Jeudy - Receiver - Sophomore
Notes: I know, I know more receivers, but this young man is something special. There was Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, and I think if Jeudy gets enough touches and continues to work on his craft he’ll be the next big time receiver out of Alabama. Feed him often!

No. 9 - Eyabi Anoma - Linebacker - Freshman
Notes: During media day, while we were waiting for Nick Saban to speak, Anoma came through the halls and he looked like a senior getting ready to go into the NFL Draft. At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds (listed in the media guide hand-out) he could very well be 255 pounds and he moves very well, I mean like a cat. Anoma has to prove it, but he sure looks it.

Coach: Pete Golding - 1st Year - Inside Linebackers
Notes: While Tosh Lupoi is the defensive coordinator, expect Lupoi to really lean on Golding this season as it’s Golding that has been a defensive coordinator before and has experience with the secondary, something Lupoi will have to learn (Saban said he’s improved in that area regarding coverages) quickly. Golding is known as a no-nonsense type of guy and has the respect of the players already.

Entry No. 6

Day 2 - August 4

Entry No. 5

All I can think of are the dam quarterbacks.

Aside from that.

I am just about wrapping up my Nick Saban re-upload after a great day of Alabama football. As I mentioned earlier, I was excited to hear Mike Locksley and Tosh Lupoi speak back to back. Locksley said exactly what Saban said, “This is Alabama’s offensive system, not Locksley’s system.” Same with Tosh, it’s not Tosh’s system, it’s Alabama’s system. It’s clear Locksley is ready for the challenge of commanding Alabama’s charge and he’s seasoned enough to utilize these weapons behind a very capable offensive line.

With Tosh, he’s young, but he’s been mentored by Saban and through his words, he was saying exactly what Saban would say regarding questions. You are who you hang around with, geez, I can’t imagine someone around my same age having access to so much wisdom daily. Credit to Tosh for working his way up the ladder, so quickly and who’s to say that he could not be in the running to replace Nick someday? He sure is impressive.

It’s been a quick two days, but I’ve seen some highlights from the offense. Young Jaylen Waddle is going to be a problem for teams with his speed and agility, just watch the video below of how well he gets out of his cuts then zips back up to full acceleration. I continue to be impressed with Tyrell Shavers, he somewhat gets overshadowed because of the dynamic group, but he’s capable of making some big-time plays.

Coach Locksley spoke highly of Ross Pierschbacher and it’s clear when Saban talks about leadership, Ross is one guy who has that characteristic. Pierschbacher and Jonah Williams always do the little things correct or so it seems.

On the defense, I spoke with Dylan Moses today and was blown away with his intellect and maturity. He’s a star now and will be a NFL player or more in the future. Very articulate and poised. I also spoke with Raekwon Davis and Isaiah Buggs, the two towers stood next to each other and blocked out the sun of my 5-foot-10 height haha.

I saw Markail Benton make a sweet grab and he’s shown improvement and as Tony said in his Saturday live practice thread Shyheim Carter is having a good fall camp early on.

Entry No. 4

Regarding Jalen's comments. Did not expect him to lay it all on the table like that. I think the writing is on the wall and while he plans to stay this season, it's clear to me that he'll bounce out after he graduates. This isn't going to end well between him and Alabama, seems like the quarterback starter is already determined and those words he spoke today were powerful. As I mentioned in one of the post somewhere on the board, Saban said do not call out attention to yourself. Jalen did that today. Not a good look. Yikes.

Entry No. 3

Both quarterbacks will be allowed to speak today at media day. The frenzy to speak with these two quarterbacks is at an all-time high. Wonder what these two young men are thinking this morning as they gear up for practice number two? So many expectations put on these two and it seems the fan base has become split over which quarterback they want to start in the opener against Louisville, with a great majority favoring Tua.

Schedule for Saturday here

That must be a strange feeling for Jalen as he's, what like 26-2 at Alabama over the last two years, but the fans want someone else. However Jalen is feeling, he seems to be dealing with the quarterback situation with good character, at least for now. The knee brace that he was wearing caught everyone's eye yesterday, but don't think it's too serious if anything at, but then again, if it was nothing, then why would Hurts being wearing it?

I'm also excited to hear Mike Locksley and Tosh Lupoi speak today. Think about Locksley, he went from Offensive analyst to receivers coach, to now the offensive coordinator at Alabama within a three-year span and is now their lead recruiter known as the closer by many. For Tosh, who is just 36 years of age it will be interesting to hear what he has to say about taking over for Pruitt and taking over the Alabama defense. Both he and Locksley (has been before) are future head coaches, so really, we're getting to listen to three head coaches speak today.

Day 1 - August 3

It was great to be back at the Mal Moore Complex as Alabama opened their first practice of fall camp. Plenty of familiar and well-respected media members piled in the hallway eagerly awaiting their first look at Alabama. For me, it’s always a treat to see the freshmen and also the upperclassmen that are now leading the position groups.

As soon as the doors opened, I darted to see the quarterbacks. Yes, Jalen Hurts (wearing a knee brace) was leading the quarterback group followed by Tua, what does that mean, likely nothing as Nick Saban has said time and time again, the quarterback position is yet to be determined. Tomorrow, the SID Josh Maxon has informed us that both Jalen and Tua will be available to the media for the only time during fall camp, the media scrum to talk to these two should be chaos.

At practice I think we all heard freshmen receiver Jaylan Waddle get called and let’s say inspired to have better form, I thought you could really see maturity from Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, and DeVonta Smith, it was a very seasoned trio and to think they are only sophomores this year. Wow.

I watched some of the tight ends and really like Irv Smith and Kedrick James. My goodness did James look like a grown man haha. Also, watched a bit of the defensive backs and Jared Mayden is a guy that no one seems to talk about, but he catches my eye each time.

During Saban’s first presser of fall camp, he seemed high energy, straight to the point that they have work to do in all areas. He mentioned that fall camp testing went great and it was one of the better sessions that they have had. Saban as he always does talked about building decline and toughness, which needs no further breakdown as it’s a long season.

I thought the secondary comments by Saban stood out most. He mentioned a lot of youth including Patrick Surtain, Josh Jobe, and Armour Davis, three guys he says he’s been impressed with along with Eddie Smith at safety.

Day two should feature a ton of interesting quotes and comments as it’s media day, an open practice, Saban speaks, Locksley, Lupoi, the quarterbacks speak, and many more Alabama players the staff will bring out. All that coverage will be posted from 9:45 AM throughout Saturday.

Entry No. 1

What's up everyone,

Happy to be here as I always say. Over the next few weeks, I'll provide you with my Alabama football fall camp journal. The journal will be from me and be a collection of written notes, reflection pieces, analysis, social media posts, videos, basically everything from my view regarding the Alabama Crimson Tide's football team. All feedback is welcomed.

Here we go.

Saw this come across my twitter feed. The tweet is from Terrell Lewis. Just heartbreaking to see this young man miss the start of the season. We have not heard anything new regarding his rehab, but it's likely he'll miss a great majority of the season, if not the entire year.

Be in touch later this evening after practice and Nick Saban's presser.
