...first of all, the best choice probably isn't the obvious choice (meaning, Marshall might not have been the right choice).. But, somewhere along the line, there was something about CNS and Urban Meyer that stood out to the people who hired them for higher profile jobs. The secret was finding those qualities in a dark horse that make for a good hire..

So, what do you look for in a coach? Clarification right now. I am not a basketball guru. In fact, I don't know much about the game. However, I think I could probably find the right man for the Bama job.
I want a high energy guy who relates exceptionally well to people, all people, especially recruits. An outgoing personality who can sell Bama to the fan base and recruits. Someone who has recruited a little better than he should have been able to do at his current and previous jobs.
Integrity goes without saying. No red flags like the ones that had to come up with the Kentucky guy.
I want a guy whose team reflects his personality on the floor. High energy on both ends of the floor. They play defense They run the floor. He gets the most out of the talent he has.
I would not know about his X's and O's (or however they term it in basketball).. That is why I would hire that research firm, because I am going to want more answers to questions about 4, 5 maybe even 6 or 7 candidates than I can possible get with my resources. Within the broad parameters I have laid down, I want to also know the following:
* What do other coaches he has competed against say about him, about his approach to the game, offensively and
defensively? What do they say about his development of talent?
* What does the league front office say about him?
* What kind of marks do pro scouts give him and his teams?
* What do former players say about him.
* What do recruits he recruited and did not get say about him?
* What kind of attendance has his teams had compared to previous coaches? Has he generated enthusiasm in the fan base?
* Does he have a total person program like CNS's "process", developing his student athletes morally, ethically, academically,
socially, and athletically? Has he ever heard of "The Pacific Institute"?
You can add or subtract from the list. At any rate, I have certainly shown I don' t know beans about basketball, but that doesn't mean we could not find the right guy.
One thing is obvious. We could not do it in a week, if we are thorough about it. Two or 3 weeks, possibly. All the more reason to be patient.
I am convinced that at the end of the search process, one candidate would stand out as being our guy. And, I have no idea who that may be.
Just some thoughts on a slow day.
