I am not trying to start another argument here and I am not going to argue. that is why I did not post this in the other thread
most everybody knows that jimmy sexton had put the word out that saban might be interested in coming back to college coaching in several spots. he did not say that saban was ready to get out of Miami as many have said. no smart agent would lose that bargaining tool. he let it be known to several schools including ala. no decision had been made to fire mike shula at that time
after shula was fired sexton began to talk in earnest with the powers that be at ala. saban would not talk to anybody period. now there was no way to know for sure saban would come, even though negotiation and salary talk did go on. mal did not trust sexton. pbjr pretty much did. mal and pbjr still stayed on the same page and were in agreement it was worth the wait. most everybody else wanted to move on.
remember this-- a good agent talks to a lot of people--ie, jimmy has talked to texas, the clevland browns, and others since saban has been at ala. pbjr thought it was a done deal and trusted sexton mal did not. mal's boss's pressured mal into the rich rod deal. mal never wanted rich rod and he told me himself that mike shula was a better coach than rich rod. he said rich rod would have a better record because the sanctions were lifted and mike had signed two decent classes that would be sophomores and juniors, but that rich rod was not a upgrade over shula. now this thread is not for a debate about that, but I think mal's attitude towards rich rod was one reason he backed out.
mal was told saban would not meet with him, but he went to Miami hoping he would at least talk to him. as I said, mal did not trust sexton and all he needed was a wink and a nod from saban to ease his mind. when saban refused to meet with him--this is when mal became the hero of this fiasco to me-- almost every body that counted wanted mal to turn around and come home except PBJR. time was getting short and signing day was drawing close. if he stayed and did not get saban then it was going to be a disaster. we would have been sitting there in jan with no coach. mal took his chance with very little support of the powers that be
now do I believe ms saban ask mal over and saban did not know he was coming-- I do not know, but I doubt it. nick pretty much runs every thing he is involved in, but even if saban set it up, mal was lead to believe by ms saban it was a surprise. I do know that was the 1st time saban himself had talked to mal.
it was complicated and a lot of things could have gone wrong, but any agent you can trust is not a good agent. as it turned out we came out of a tuff situation smelling like a rose
the only reason I got a little upset in the other thread is-- when somebody says mal had nothing to do with hiring saban and it was a done deal that mal almost screwed up is wrong. ask texas and many others how much they trust sexton-- I will defend mal moore as long as I live, even though the people that actually know things know he does not need defending
roll-tide
sorry about this being so long, but I needed to get it off my chest--I am done with it now
