In 1996 Florida is king in Football with Steve Spurrier( who was not a big name when they hired him but an up and comer from Duke) and they are looking fo a BB coach. They are a football school with a mediocre BB reputation and mediocre facilities.They hire a guy who was barely 30 years old and had been a head coach at Marshall for 3 years but he was full of energy and could coach.
Look at Auburn a few years ago in Football. Your arch rival has won another NC and you are looking for a coach. They tried to go big name and got turned down and go with a guy that really wants the job has a lot of energy and could coach.
We just need a guy that can coach and is full of energy, screw the big name. I would rather have someone who wants to be here and will be all over the state promoting the program. I am not sure if that is White, Prohm, Underwood or someone else. But when someone hits that press conference full of piss and vinegar any true AL BB fan will be on board, the ones moaning on the Internet boards about no big name can take a hike. I remember when a school 50 miles away that never had a basketball team hired the head coach from UCLA who had been to two final fours with two different teams and we hired a 20 year assistant named Wimp. The "Big Name" people would be jumping off a bridge or at least giving up on basketball or calling for the AD's head if that happened today.
