Alabama golfer Nick Dunlap won the U.S. Amateur championship Sunday, edging out Ohio State's Neal Shipley to secure the title. Dunlap, a sophomore, joins Tiger Woods as the only two male golfers to win a US Amateur and US Junior Amateur championship.
Alabama has now produced two U.S. Amateur champions as Jerry Pate earned the honor in 1974. The last Crimson Tide golfer to reach the finals of the event was Micahel Thompon in 2007.
During his debut season at Alabama last year, Dunlap, a Huntsville, Ala., native, earned first-team All-SEC honors, leading the team while shooting an average of 70.35 strokes per round.
