Oats comment

Haha that’s the midwestern guy in him. I think people get too caught up in being politically correct or just giving coach speak that a guy like Oats can rub you the wrong way. It’s the #1 seed and 16 seed. Obviously everyone knows we have more talent. It’s just a coach said it.

In my opinion he shouldn't have said it. But then again my opinion is rooted in being a fan, sitting at home with no skin in the game other than being worried I'll have to deal with ridicule from my friends if Bama loses. It's his neck on the line. Make comments like that then go back it up. I am more annoyed when coaches, in particular Saban, goes on and on about the challenges of facing North Texas' defense.

No big deal. CNO just stated the obvious. Multiple 5 and 4 stars on the roster with a finalist for National POY on the team. That is not disrespecting the other teams. The only way Bama does not win against either of those teams is if they play well below their ability.

This is just another media leach trying to suck his ounce of blood out of Bama basketball.

Normally I wouldn't want to hear our coach say something like this. But Oats brings sort of a cocky confidence to our team that seems to be working very well. We don't seem to be afraid to play anyone, which is evidenced by the way we've played against some of the best teams in college basketball this season.

But what’s the point in saying it? What does it help? If it doesn’t help your team, or could hurt your team, then don’t say it.
You can think it. You can say it behind closed doors. But not to the world. It’s disrespectful of the opponent to say it publicly. And everyone is going to use it in some way. Just nothing good comes out of it.

Why should we be afraid? If he wants the players to feel that way, tell it to them. I’ve stood in front of teams and said, we are better than this group. They can’t beat us if we take care of us. But that doesn’t mean you said it publicly. My entire life has been spent around 3 of the best in the Alabama high school world. They could make their teams believe the 8u rec team could beat them. Like another guy we know tries to do….Saban.

I wouldn’t say it. I would reference Virginia’s loss instead. But, it really doesn’t bother me, if for no other reason than I can’t stand this new PC society. In the end, it really is nothing.

If Oats was a football coach in the SEC, Saban would have his comments up all over the place during their game week. He needs to learn he doesn’t have to say exactly what he thinks all of the time.
I don't have an issue with a coach speaking his mind. Oats isn't being a dick, he's just looking at facts and pointing them out. We ARE more talented. That's why a 16 seed has only beaten a 1 seed ONE TIME in March Madness history.

We can agree to disagree. The Alabama basketball players and program gained nothing by the comments. If anything, they can hurt the team. They aren’t going to help the team. So, no reason to say it publicly.

IMO this is a side of his personality that just doesn't project well to the general media.

He's a math geek that taught math and uses that same tact as a coach. There aren't many members of academia that are more prone to bluntly stating something with zero regard for how it may be received.

I keep hoping at some point he will embrace the older coaching clichés and just shrug off questions that lead to him essentially saying "we're the better team so we're preparing for the game after this next game". That likely isn't true but it's how comments like this come across.
