She was up by two strokes during fourth round play of the ANA Inspiration played at Rancho Mirage, CA.

Tournament Officials approached her as she was coming off the 12th green on Sunday to inform her she was being assessed a 4 stroke penalty. She went on to lose in sudden death. The penalty ended up costing her $150,000.

Tournament officials received an email from a viewer advising them that Thompson placed her ball an inch away from its original position on the 17th hole during third round play the day before. The ball was about a foot away from the cup when the 1-inch placement error was observed. For a pro golfer, a 1 foot-put is a tap in. See link below. Includes video of ball placement. Having watched the video, I did not see much, if any, ball misplacement.

Officials reviewed the video and concluded that her inaccurate placement of the ball, though unintentional, was a violation. They assessed her a 2 stroke penalty for the faulty ball placement and an additional 2-stroke penalty for turning in an "inaccurate score card".

Talk about heavy handed officiating that affected the tournament championship. Tiger Woods and other pro golfers blasted the PGA.

IS THIS A JOKE?
