Bama has over looked Lon Kruegar, Mike Anderson and Ben Howland. All proven winners at Big 5 that would be highly successful here. Instead they go after an up and comer risk and a coach who makes them wait a week before he'll answer leaving no other proven winners available and embarassing the program. Howland should have been a no brainer. Get off your high horse and make a real hire. No one is saying hire Bob Huggins but come on. The hires made around the conference pretty much puts us in the back of the bus to stay unless we bring in a guy who can recruit and actually develop talent. Unfortunately I believe that opportunity was squander when we waited a week when we could have had Howland. Now he will be beating us on a regular basis soon.

I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly that not hitting on Howland BEFORE pulling the plug on Grant.... was a BIG mistake.

That said, "if" Marshall was Plan A, and he/his agent indicated considerable interest.... I can not fault that process or the decision to pursue him vigorously.

I just felt that Howland was a "can't miss"..... "if" he'd have had interest in Bama.

"WHAT IF"..... as the writers for this site have cautioned.....
Marshall, et al, are VERY concerned about the impending "changing of the guard" at UA (Battle, Pres, BOT's,), and none of the coaches who currently have good jobs are going to be interested for that reason?

A bit worrisome.

I agree. BH a no brainer. Don't remember who was available when Grant was hired. I suspect CM behind the Pitino push.

If you hired someone who couldn't recruit and develop talent, woukdn't you be at the back of the bus regardless of who the other schools hired?

Howlans should have been hired. He has a better on-the-court resume than Marshall and he was was a sure thing for us. Really, really dumb.

You can avoid the back of the bus or even be above average by having either abilities of recruiting or developing. Grant had Bama at the middle. He recruited well other than big men but the development was lacking. However, now with the upgrade in coaching across the conference both are probably needed.
