The city of Atmore came together Saturday to fight for one of their own, and also help raise money to battle a horrific disease.

Saturday morning was the Don McNeal 5K Community Walk for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which started and ended at the Atmore Area YMCA. The event is named for McNeal, a star football player at Escambia County High School who went on to play for The University of Alabama and in the NFL.

Don McNeal was in attendance Saturday, and thanked the community for its support.
McNeal, a 1976 graduate of ECHS, has MS. It is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.

McNeal was not only in attendance Saturday, but his spirits were high as he thanked the crowd for coming out to support both him and the National MS Society.

“They told me that I have MS,” McNeal said. “But as you see on my T-shirt, I may have MS but MS doesn’t have me.

“I really appreciate everyone who came out and participated today.”

Katelyn Harrison was the first female finisher, and District Judge Jeff White was the first male finisher.
