Question for the future: Finding CNS's successor

This obviously is not an urgent issue but it's a bye week and this has been on my mind. When it comes time to replace a coach who is retiring, is it customary to let him recommend, if not choose, his successor? I would trust his judgement above anybody else. Can you name any instances where this has occurred before?
