Some of us have talked about this in the past. I’m not against recruiting elite talent and guys that are one and done. But building a program on that is a tough living. Why don’t we recruit some basketball players that can shoot, know how to play, etc and that will commit to the process and develop them into better players. Do that year in and year out and sprinkle in the one and dimes when you can get them and use the portal. Look at all these teams left. There has been a ton of development on these teams with their players.

I think there is a core of players that will stick around..
Burnett, Rylan, bediako, Pringle, Jaden etc…

All those guys will be around

This was the most complete team in the country on paper. Every player on the team showed they could do all of those things throughout the season, but a bad game at the end ruined people’s perspective.

This team has a solid core and solid class coming in as well. Brandon was the reason we had a historic season so talents like that can take you far, but you have to have other dudes step up. Unfortunately they did not tonight.

This was an extremely impressive development job by Oats and staff this year. You saw a big jump in Brandon, Bediako, Clowney, and Griffen throughout the season. You’ll have guys like Bradley, Griffen, Pringle all get another year in and improve more.

Too much finesse and not enough muscle! If the refs are going to call the playoffs loose then you need some muscle. Many rebounds that Bama came down with were taken away by more aggressive play. San Diego challenged every rebound, some of their takeaways were fouls that were not called. Bama lost the game because we were not aggressive as a team on either ends of the court!

You just further my point. We might not get another Miller in our lifetime. So banking on another one of those to take us to the sweet 16 isn’t ideal. And it still only took us to the sweet 16.

Sadly accurate. Just not meant to be for Bama basketball. 1-11 in Sweet 16 games. And shoulda/ coulda won at least half of them.

Charles and maybe JQ are the only guys I can think of that Bama signed and developed of the course of a couple years.

Clowney, Griffen, Bradley, Burnett, Miles, Quinerly, and Bediako.
Sears, Gurley, and Pringle are multiple year transfers.
Welch 1 yr.
Miller 1 and done.

I don't remember anyone thinking Clowney would be 1 and done. So he developed so well he became 1 and done.
Miles locked up.

I see what you're saying, there's not that many 3 and 4 year players that were HS recruits but you would be insane to choose a lesser player just so they stay more years.

Nobody is saying take lesser players. But we aren’t getting Millers and Clowneys every year. But instead of going in the portal and getting Gurleys and Welch’s and such, a 4 year guy that could really shoot and be developed wouldn’t be a bad thing.

To your point Jaylen Forbes is now a Jr. at Tulane and avg. 18 points per game. Havn't seen him play and maybe his game doesn't fit what Oats wanted to do but upperclassmen are huge. Such a heavy reliance on 3 freshmen this season scared me from the word go. No chance a team lead by freshmen was going to go deep in the tournament.

That’s the guy!!! I couldn’t remember his name. A lot of us hated to see him go. He seemed like he had real potential. He was always around the ball. And he was so close from 3 but they just wouldn’t go in for him. But his misses were always right there. Hated to see him go.

Just think if Oats had kept Forbes, and ran Miles off?

Obviously none of us have any idea what it takes to implement and maintain a successful system on the college level. I love the talent that Oats seems to be able to bring in but if you'll look at the '19 and '20 recruiting classes 10 guys were signed. None of those guys are still around. Hopefully Oats continues to recruit at a high level and we see guys like Griffen and Bradley stick around for their careers.

It’s not that Oats didn’t keep Forbes. Forbes wanted to leave. Wish he would’ve stayed. He always had potential.
Exactly and Miller was the only recruit projected to be a one and done. l hope the OP is not saying we shouldn't have taken him. Just because players transfer out does not mean they were run off. l think Oates is doing a great job.
