I was at the Tide Tipoff this evening. While waiting in line, Tide Sr Retin Obasohan walked by the crowd. A lady (whom obviously knew him) called out his name from the crowd. He walked over, greeted her, and gave her a hug.
While the two were talking, Obasohan looked over at a man in the crowd and told the lady, "Hold on just a second." He ducked under the rope and said, "How are you doing buddy?" I just assumed it was another person he knew, until I heard him ask the gentlemen's name. I turned around to see Obasohan reach out to shake the hand of a man whom appeared to have some sort of mental handicap and was also in a wheelchair. The man's face just lit up and the two had a short conversation, including a compliment of the man's new Bama shirt.
After the brief exchange, Obasohan thanked the man for coming out and supporting the team and he headed on his way.
I know student athletes do these sort of things all the time, but it was an awesome gesture and I wanted to pass it along.
What a great young man, and I hope he has a huge season. I'm excited about Bama basketball again.
