Don't get me wrong, I think it would have been a great look for DeBoer to make the SECCG in his 1st season at Bama. That said, I'm sure glad that we didn't make it. After watching how Texas' defense completely controlled TAMU in their game last Saturday, I think it's fair to assume that, had Bama ended up in a matchup with them in the SECCG, we very well could have been embarrassed along the same lines as the OU game.
Texas does a great job defensively of playing sound on their assignments. Their D-line does an excellent job of not over pursuing while also collapsing the pocket on a QB without leaving much room to bail out. The secondary does a good job of keeping everything in front of them & really taking away the big play down field. They make teams put together methodical drives down the length of the field, something Bama is not particularly skilled at this year. They kept who, IMO, is a very talented mobile QB from TAMU in Marcell Reed, bottled up pretty much all night. I think Bama's lack of consistency on offense, reliance on Milroes' ability to get going in the run game and the big downfield shots that are predicated on that, could have made for a really ugly game had we managed to punch our ticket to Atlanta.
After watching UT vs. TAMU Saturday and going back to look at some of Texas' other film from this season, I for one and grateful the Tide missed out on the SEC championship game. I think it would have been a terrible matchup for us and, if it turned out to be the thorough beat down that I suspect it could have been, might have done more harm than good to our chances at making a run in the playoffs. Looks like we managed to sneak into the playoff anyway but I'm not to confident that this years team has what it takes to win a natty. Of course, anything can happen in the playoff. If they get lucky with the matchups, Bama might find itself close to the NCG, but, asking honestly Bama fans, do you think the team really deserve to be there this year?
