Had the chance to watch Kaleb Edwards and Chuck McDonald at the Navy All-American Bowl over the past two days. They'll practice again Thursday and Friday before Saturday's game.
I wasn't at McDonald's first practice session today, but he snagged a few interceptions. He talked about becoming a more "sticky" defender this season and while he hasn't had a ton of highlight plays, you can definitely see that. He blankets people and also looked decent in run support. He has a sturdy frame that looks college ready and he's planning on being in the weight room a lot before he arrives this summer. I did watch him get beat on one out route going against Ohio State signee Quincy Porter, who was able to muscle his way off McDonald and get separation to the outside, but Porter is one of the better receivers in this class and overall I thought Chuck more than held his own. @samspiegelman rated him the second-best player of the day.
Unfortunately for any Edwards highlight tape, most of his reps have come as a blocker thus far. The West have used him in the backfield in 7v7 reps a lot, but he does look good as a blocker and has made a few nice catches thus far. He might be the tallest guy in attendance and talked about being a versatile option at tight end similar to how Alabama used Robbie Ouzts this season. Hoping to see him make some more catches tomorrow, but he has excellent athleticism and it's easy to see him becoming that versatile option at the next level. Edwards will be using his size on the basketball court before heading to Bama this summer.
Both are very excited to arrive!
Will have a notebook with a few underclassmen targets talking about their Bama interest tomorrow but thought I'd drop a few quick notes on the signees from what I've seen so far.
Now onto some Tide hoops at 6 p.m. vs. South Carolina. Column out tomorrow!
