Something to discuss for fun

I need to see this team, both players and coaches alike, go out and put a product on the court like they did when they went to the sweet 16. Until I see Oats do that with players he has signed I refuse to get excited about a roster. In today's climate in basketball you better be able to gel kids quickly because you're not going to have them more than two years. If Bediako, Miles, and Burnett lay an egg next year and Bama struggles then why get excited if Oats signs 3 top 20 freshmen??? Not bashing Oats but I was pumped about last year's roster.

Certainly not all of it, but a lot of it comes down to JQ not taking the huge leap we all thought he would, Burnett being hurt, and JD not playing up to the level we all thought capable. Lots of other things played into the turnout on the season, but those stuck out the most in my opinion. Also, Oats is still a relatively young coach so I’m excited to see how he grows as a coach for the team along with the potential of the roster.

I didn’t expect JQ to take a huge leap. I just expected him to be what he was the year before at the least. JD was the one that we all expected more out of. And that’s what Frazor was talking about…Oats evaluating and recruiting the right guys, then developing them.
I like Oats. I was the first guy on here saying lock him up. But I wouldn’t be getting excited about seeing his growth. He has to have the right players or it won’t work bc it’s fairly obvious that growth isn’t his goal. He isn’t interested in adjusting.

Every coach needs the right players to succeed. He adjusted this past season, we ran a lot more pick and roll this year, largely because of bediako. I didn't like how we looked at times during the year either but we were a 6 seed in the tournament, there's past coaches that wouldn't have gotten that team in at all

My son has Basketball camp at Bama in a couple weeks. They usually let you watch practices. I will tell you all what I see with my untrained eye.

Well, I went to basketball camp for my son. They didn't practice Monday, and I missed the practice they had yesterday. My son watched it and said they looked good. He liked how Sears looked. Sorry, he didn't give many details. He is still there and I think he is watching again today.

So here is what my son said. Brandon Miller had around 3 dunks at practice and he posterized Burnette on a dunk driving to the basket. He thought Burnette looked like our best player. He said Sears played really well again. Big Chuck is Canada so I imagine the team will look a lot different in a month. This is all from a 13 year old so take it for it is worth.

His info is the only I trust. Buy a hidden camera and Have him record some video with player interviews.

In Oats defense i assume he predicted he would have some sort of leadership on last years team. That hurt a lot more than folks may thinj

I don't disagree. However, on paper he had every coach's dream of a loaded backcourt and they looked like anything but leaders. Leadership is just one more trait that you better hit on because kids are not going to be there long enough to step up as Juniors and Seniors to lead their squads.

Alex Tchikou was nothing but a bust and Bediako had to play more minutes than I think the coaches wanted him too. Our guard play was stricken with turnovers of all degrees and along with not much scoring and rebounding from the 3 and 4 positions.
Defense from the same players was not nearly as good as the year before and the leadership was one of the biggest factors that attributed to all of the things above.

I hate these new Bama fans. I think we were a six seed in the NCAA and beat three of the four previous years final four teams. The victory over Gonzaga in my opinion was one of the biggest victories in program history. These new fans don't understand some of the lean years this program went thru. I'd gladly take a six seed or better if that's a disappointment please explain what you expect????

A.) Not a new fan here and have posted many times that I will be content for many years as long as this team makes the tournament every year.

B.) This thread is about the roster. A preseason roster. I have gotten excited about preseason rosters for 20 years now and that really hasn't worked out well. I was excited about last year's roster and could not wait for the season to start.

C.) My expectations are that these highly coveted recruits are going to develop and produce rather than check out after 6 months. I really don't care what the seed is I just want the team to fight.

I was disappointed in how we played. We were a miserable team to watch a lot of the season. I think it's entirely possible we are better this year than last but end up with a worse seed. And I'd be ok with that because last year everyone knew we were doing nothing in the tournament. The team just flat out sucked by that point

Good luck to your son. l will be looking forward to your reports. Pop said you were a good basketball poster. Said y'all had a few disagreements back in the Anthony Grant days, but they were always respectful disagreements.

Thanks, bud. The camp was back in June. He had a good time. Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch them practice. My son did. He didn't offer a ton of insight other than Miller was really good, and he felt like Burnette was our best player. Who was your dad?

Yes, we disagreed with Grant, but I miss your dad. He was great and I liked how he stood by what he believed. I hope he is doing well.
He is doing great. He has AMD and can't read and can't drive. He misses this board and misses all you guys. He got banned for life for some reason by Kyle. He could come back now, but he can't see how to do it.

Very odd move by Kyle.

They were so bad in the last 3rd of the year,I told my buddy that goes to the games with me that we wouldn't win 20 games.

According to the roster we will have 4 spots to fill with this years commits.
Miller leaving early imo, Gurly and Welch are Graduates and JQ is the lone senior unless I missed something. So there is a minimum of 3 spots left unless we have a player or two transfer.
I'm sure CNO will take his time to get these three spots filled.
Any guesses as to who may fill them???

there is a minimum of 4 spots to fill with only 12 on scollarship this year. miller leaving would make 5.

sam walters, mouhamed dioubate, rj johnson, and davin cosby are all solid players that can play more than one position. we might leave 1 or 2 spots open for a transfer.

IMO there was a lack of horsepower on last year’s squad that became clear over the course of the season and it did affect the team’s attitude eventually.

Unfortunately Shack just isn’t an NBA quality player, even though he was a good college player, but he wanted so bad to show he could play at another level that just wasn’t there. And JQ pressing and not shooting as well as the year before was a killer.

Couple those situations with JD coming in as our 5 star and realizing that his skill development was waaaaay behind where it needed to be in order to be a lottery pick guard and Keon trying to step in and be Herb with a jump shot, while in reality Keon is 5 inches shorter than Herb and Herb is a generational defensive player.

All that combined with losing a lot of solid experience guys from the year before and I think the team really did fairly well in retrospect.

I do have high hopes for this year. The team is bigger overall and the transfers should provide a baseline of experienced production. If the young guys show out, like it seems they may be able to do, then this squad can be special.

This is going to be a fun group to watch. CNO will easily play 10 players maybe more.
Depth seems to be solid especially where we didn't have last year with the wing players and Bediako was a first year guy.

Hoping to get JQ back before conference play starts. l believe there is a good chance of that after hearing a press conference Coach Oates had 2 or 3 weeks ago. Sounded like his rehab was ahead of schedule.

I just assume we are going to get 2 players on average every year from the transfer portal. Like it or not, it is just the way college BB has become. The only question is “how good are those couple players going to be?” HS BB recruiting, while still important, is not as crucial as it was before, because now you have the opportunity to get players who are already experienced, and have developed their game more. Just my thoughts.

when q gets back, this is as deep we have been in a long time at guard. i agree that 10 will be in the rotation.
