“It’s not the ball- It’s how much damn air they put into them. All of them are like bouncy balls. You can tell no coach or real player aired them up. Only a dumba** administrator would fill the ball to capacity.”

I can see that. Fifty years ago we had a toy called "Super Ball." Once you dropped it, it would bounce and bounce and bounce. Too much air will will turn the basketball into a Super Ball.

LOL

Seriously though, there was some chatter late the regular season about the new Wilson basketballs. The handful of games where we used them on the road were some of our worst shooting performances. At the time it wasn't about how much air was in them as much as they were too soft or something. Maybe someone's solution to them being too soft was too much air?

To the overall point in the link, it really is odd that there isn't some sort of standard for the ball used in regular season and tournament games. I know college football doesn't have a set football they use but each team gets to use their own when on offense so it would be rare for them to get used to one brand/type of football and then suddenly not be able to use it in a game. That's not really possible in a continuous motion sport.

Do we need to enlist the NFL officials measuring ball inflation so we don't have an... inflategate?

Both inflation and the texture of the ball matter greatly. When I was in high school we would start the season with a brand new ball so slick that it couldn’t be palmed and had to be sort of pushed toward the basket because of lack of traction.

I always thought basketballs got slick when they got old. But too much air sucks regardless. Do teams have contracts with certain companies to play with certain balls? I wondered why you wouldn’t want to play with the tournament ball all year long….

I wish colleges played with universally the same ball and be checked at the same air pressure. Obviously that can be overlooked easily, but feel and air pressure matter greatly.

When the ball is dropped freely, it's supposed to bounce around the waist. But, if you are both using the same ball, then there should be no advantage during a game.

Always thought that but you know there is money involved somehow. Bama use to play with a Nike ball, not even sure if they still do? I’m sure that was tied into an apparel/jersey contract somewhere.
