Many questioned the wisdom of bringing in a QB transfer with 2 years to play when we had so many young QBs on the roster, but last year proved that all Coker was promised was a chance to compete and he wasn't able to win the job. I for one was glad to see Blake win the job and do such an outstanding job and I wish we had not taken Coker. I thought then that it wasn't fair to the young QBs we had recruited out of high school and who had been waiting for their chance and we saw some leave the program. Anyway, that's all water under the bridge but I did think it might be valuable to evaluate the pros and cons of the decision going forward and the effect, good or bad, on the team now and in the future. Feel free to add your pros and cons.
Good
1. The competition is pushing all QBs.
2. If Coker doesn't win the job, beating out a 5th year senior should boost confidence to the stratosphere for whoever does.
3. If Coker does win the job, he will be a more mature QB (perhaps).
4. Downfield passing may improve with Coker's skill set.
Bad
1. Causing an extended QB competition. We would perhaps have a starter by now.
2. If Coker wins the job, we have to break in a new QB next year.
3. Whoever wins the job next year will have less time to develop.
4. Coker's skill set does not lend itself to the transition to a more fast paced offense with a dual threat QB.
