The new basketball coliseum has hit an inflationary snag, it seems, and its groundbreaking is on hold…

Construction costs over original estimates are up 30-40%, and neither building it nor having the funds is viable at this point, financially irresponsible even.

Maybe things will change but this is the realistic answer to the costs associated

Things like that happen when you wait 15 years too long to build it.

People don’t like to hear this, but this is just the reality of the situation now. Truly surprised the # is only 30-40% higher. I would have thought it was much more. Sure we can argue it should have been built sooner, but that time has passed.

It prices and subs be higher now …

Let’s just say it’s 40% of 100 million … that’s nothing to write off as small.

I don’t remember the original price of the new facility and grounds

40% is what I keep hearing on bids . Some supplies are hard to get even when contractors are willing to pay. Its frightening what is happening with construction. The City of Tuscaloosa is having these problems and I know UA is too. UA has so many Contruction projects going on at once. Probably 3 more years before much progress on a new bb arena.

If a new bb arena isn't built, the UA will have to dish out some serious $$$ to keep Oats if he has continued success. I like Coleman for sentimental reasons, but we have to build a better mouse trap to stay competitive.

They have better for all our sake’s, but yes, building is massively slowing nationwide. This should force material prices, and, most likely, labor prices down. Not to mention, the interest rate carrying charges should be cheaper in a few years.
Oats may be coaching North Carolina before then…

Given the near total silence on the arena from the admin this push back isn't surprising.

The window for a new arena, if there was one in recent years, was probably around 5 years or so ago. Interest rates were on the floor, tax changes had just happened, building wasn't out of control just yet though costs were up over early 2010s, and IIRC that was around the time that the full Bryce property was finally being taken over by UofA and development was really moving there.

The scary part is there aren't a lot of building costs that can come down much other than maybe labor which is usually a sign of much larger problems in the economy that totally negate that cost saving. If it's something primarily sourced out of an area in or anywhere near Ukraine/Russia then forget it for now. Anything from Asia isn't much better.

If we can't build the arena then Oats better have a practically bottomless NIL well and all the support staff he could imagine using.

We need a billionaire alum that is a huge basketball fan like the Ducks have with Phil. Someone that says "build this and I'll foot most of the costs".

Stupid. Environments matters to players & coaches.

Houston's environment wins over any coach/player compared to Coleman 100/100 times. It's not even close.
