The hard facts:

1. We lost our top three players from last year and we were not very good last year. One of the players was a fourth year starter, one is in the NBA and the other is starting point guard at Memphis. We replaced them with three, three star recruits, and we lost two three star recruited bench players in addition to the three starters.

2. We do not have a starter on this team that could start at Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Ole Miss, LSU, Texas A&M, and I don't know about Miss State and Auburn. Our talent level is awful. We do not have a player on the front line that could start at any other SEC school. It may sound that I am harsh on our talent, but it is not the fault of the players that they were offered scholarships to Alabama. If someone wanted to offer me a free education, I would take the offer.

3. Our best player is a true freshman and that may be true about our second and third best players. The two best players in the program are sitting this year, due to NCAA transfer rules. We have signed two excellent recruits and have a third committed. Next year we will be young, but at least we will have some players.

4. Anthony Grant was a good man, but he could not recruit and on top of that he could not develop players.

I don't care who the coach is at Alabama, but no coach could have developed this team into a top 120 program. I look at the schedule and I do not see where we get 10 wins. People are upset because we lost to Dayton, but Dayton may be the best team in the A-10 this year and they are a top 16 program. You have to play these teams to see how far you have to go to be a winner. We have a long way to go to be a winner. You don't develop a team by playing Cupcake State.

I have heard people say that with Anthony Grant we would not have lost that bad, but there was a rules change that Grant could not have dealt with, the 30 second clock. With Grant the object was to run 30 seconds off the clock and then take any shot that was not available. Grant played not to lose, too badly, which is not playing to win. I would rather lose a game 80-48 against Dayton with Avery Johnson, than endure another season with Anthony Grant and lose that game 60-38 to Dayton. I'm sorry, but good defense is not running the shot clock down to 2 seconds and then shooting, in order to limit the other teams scoring chances. I'm sorry, but shooting percentages are not learned when you are 21, they are developed over the years with practice. A player can either play and shoot or he cannot. A college coach can correct some mistakes, but sometimes a player has to realize he has a problem before he improves.

I'm sorry, but Avery Johnson came to Alabama and has not even had one recruiting class. We have a the talent of a lower level D-1 team. We have no recruited seniors on this team and two recruited juniors Our seniors came to us by way of New Mexico where he was not a starter and Belgium. One of our juniors transferred from Lockwood. We do not have the talent needed to play in the SEC.
