I keep reading a true freshman has not won the NC since Holieway at OU.
Dan Marino did not lose a game once he became the starter, starter injured, in the 7th game of his FR year. They finished # 7. Would they have won em all with Dan ...after all he replaced a guy named Trocano.
Fact is very few true freshman start for a team which is capable of winning the NC at the other position groups on the team. Name the true freshman who started for teams with a NC defense and offense waiting for a QB.
Now looking at Hurts ... I will share WHY I THINK he can do it.
First his support group
He has as good a group of WR's / TE's as there is in the nation imo.
He has a good OL anchored by 2 tackles who will be first round picks.
He has a good group of running backs who can at anytime go 50. Plus they can catch the ball.
Now for Jalen
His is the calmest FR heck one of the calmest QB's I have seen.
He can beat you with his legs ... at anytime he can break the pocket and go. I think he is better running when the play breaks down or a middle draw vs running wide.
He is very good at completing the short passes .... and is getting at going downfield and with Ridley and Stewart they will win some jump balls.
He has a long way to go at reading defenses and accuracy down the field ... his legs can help make up for that weakness.
He also has a HC and OC who will design an offense to take advantage of his strengths and minimize the plays which could expose his weakness.
He also has the best defense among the contenders imo.
Will he do it ... I don't know. Can he do it ... YES.
