Is how this team can be so dominant in one game and the very next game look as if they don’t belong in the tournament. Ridiculous free throw shooting, turnovers, no defensive rebounding. What happened to our offense?
The same thing that happens whenever Bama faced a quality team that can and will defend aggressively on the perimeter; they don't have a plan B. Very few screens on or off the ball. No mid-range game by design. I said before and I hope Oats proves me wrong, but his offense is like have the Gus Malzahn of basketball. It's a one trick offense that when rolling looks great. But when it's run into someone that can defend it, Oats has yet to develop a counter. He's a young coach and is smart enough to figure it out.Is how this team can be so dominant in one game and the very next game look as if they don’t belong in the tournament. That beyond inexcusable missed call, followed by another one just as bad on the charge Herb took right after that, definitely, changed the potential outcome of this game. That said, with the way we were shooting FT’s, maybe it didn’t.Really wish we could know how this game would have gone if Gary had gotten to shoot his two with about two and a half remaining. Such a screw up with that missed call. Would have definitely changed the way this thing played out.
Agreed. We played poorly tonight. UCLA was such an inferior team that it took us going 12-25 from the FT line to beat us in OT. That is what stings. We lost to an obviously inferior club because we couldn’t make a frickin FT. That isn’t Oats fault.I didn't really think Ucla played dominant defense, I thought we played slow offensively which gave us less opportunities. We typically win our poorly played games by getting off a lot of shots.
They just didn't turn it over a lot and they got back on D. They kept us from running up and down. Our half court offense isn't a lot to talk about. I hope it evolves. I haven't been a fan of it all year.I didn't really think Ucla played dominant defense, I thought we played slow offensively which gave us less opportunities. yea and herb`s second foul was bullshit and then they run flat over him and dont call it.Really wish we could know how this game would have gone if Gary had gotten to shoot his two with about two and a half remaining. It was tough to establish when Jones got two quick fouls, Reese got hurt, and Shackleford not only disappeared offensively, but turned the ball over, personally, like 4 times in a row when he touched it during UCLA’s run.If we would've made our free throws we probably would've won but I never use that as an excuse because this team had plenty of time to make up for that.
Even though we had plenty of time and opportunities, I thought we lost the game in the first half by not establishing our style of play.

That pretty much sums it up.4 Point 4 rebounds 5 turnovers
True, but FTs are gimmies and going 14/25 is embarrassing at best. If you miss that many FTs, you had better be making some shots elsewhere. UCLA was 20/25, which was more than enough to decide the outcome. If we would've made our free throws we probably would've won but I never use that as an excuse because this team had plenty of time to make up for that.

Teams that normally advance in the tourney find multiple ways to win. I keep saying that last night was one of those nights where an old concept probably would have made the difference. Dean Smith made a living running his 4 corners offense and spreading the floor. Our shooters are so much better when spotting up as opposed to creating shots. UCLA had no answer for JQ's quickness off the dribble. With better spacing, JQ could have had an easy double double with points and assists. Poor spacing allowed UCLAs defense to help without paying a price. I also think Shack was too amped playing against what was basically his hometown team.
That's my point, Riley should have been standing around the 5 second line with his man if the floor was properly spread. With poor spacing, UCLA was able to cheat over a lot on defense and defend a lot less space. Switching on a guy in the post is a lot easier than trying to defend him above the top of the key.I think UCLA did have an answer for JQ, and it was Riley who blocked at least 3 of his shots. I'm a big JQ fan, but he needed to realize that the lazy underhanded layup that he likes to use wasn't working and needed to take it to the rim stronger to at least draw fouls. Although judging from our performance from the line last night they would have likely been misses, but maybe Riley would have fouled out. I thought he was the difference maker for UCLA last night. Both offensively and defensively.
Good points. UCLA was able to pack the middle all night.Teams that normally advance in the tourney find multiple ways to win.
