Recruitment
Many were surprised to see Jonah Williams, four-star offensive tackle from Folsom High School in Calif., announce his commitment to Alabama on Saturday morning. Williams informed lead recruiters Mario Cristoabal and Tosh Lupoi about his decision early Saturday morning before speaking with Nick Saban a little later in the day.
Several had predicted Williams to sign with Auburn. He is originally from Georgia. His mother graduated from Auburn and his father graduated from Georgia. He took his first visit to Alabama on Monday. The coaching staff did a very good job recruiting him. Coach Cristobal and Coach Lupoi developed a great relationship. Coach Cristobal really took the lead and closed the deal.
Alabama will need to continue recruiting Williams until he arrives on campus. The good news he is considered a "no-nonsense" type of guy who is not expected to flip his commitment or give heavy consideration to other programs. He will also enroll at Alabama in January.
The player
Williams is considered an 'elite' player. One of the very best offensive tackles seen on film this year. He ranks right at the top of the Tide's 'top targets' list in the 2016 class.
Alabama measured his arms at 35.5 inches when he visited on Monday. He was 6-foot-5, 285-pounds with a very low body fat percentage. He has excellent length and strength. He is considered a "weight room fanatic" by his coaches. He plays with high intensity. His motor is always running. He is a smash-mouth football player who really fits in well with Alabama's offensive line unit. He was recruited as a tackle. He can play on either side.
The numbers
Alabama has five commitments in the 2016 class with Williams the first offensive lineman. Alabama wants to add at least four offensive linemen this year. Williams is a great start. There are several other offensive linemen UA has high interest, and some who are still in the evaluation stages.
A few OL prospects Alabama really like include: Gregory Little, five-star offensive tackle from Allen High School in Texas, Ben Bredeson, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisc., Bryce Mathews, four-star offensive tackle from Brentwood Academy in Tenn., Robert Kraeling, three-star offensive tackle from Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart, Ga., Donavaughn Campbell, four-star offensive guard from Ponchatoula High School in La., John Simpson, four-star offensive guard from Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C., Scott Lashley, offensive tackle from West Point High School in Miss., and Deonte Brown, offensive guard from Austin High School in Decatur.
