Here's what Nick Saban after practice on Thursday:
— "All in all, I think that spring practice has -- we've made a lot of progress. We've had a lot of opportunity to give guys a lot of reps."
— "We split up the squads on A-Day so we get maximum reps for most of the players, which does not really mean the entire first team and the entire first team is on the other team."
— "Had a draft yesterday for all the staff, support staff, recruiting staff, training staff -- everybody got picked. You got your team for steak on Monday or your team for beans and paper plates, and plastic forks and spoons."
— Nick Saban on A-Day: "The emphasis to the players is, I don't care what team you're on. Can you play winning football at your position?"
— Nick Saban said he's been pleased with Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold, who have had "really good springs." But they are "really young after that" at cornerback. "We need to make a lot of progress." He said younger CBs have ability but not consistency.
— Saban on the transfer portal: "I think some college players think the portal is a one-way street. But it's really not, because we have an opportunity to bring guys in and replace them too, if they choose to do that."
— Nick Saban on portal losses: "We don't want anybody to get into the portal. We'd love to keep everybody on our team, on our team. ... It's a little bit like free agency in the NFL. But NFL players know they're expendable."
— Nick Saban on A-Day: "I don't think we're going to lose."
— Nick Saban on confidence in QBs: "We have confidence in the guys we have in the program. They've worked hard all spring. ... I'm confident in the guys that we have. I'm confident they're going to work hard and be dedicated and committed to continuing to improve."
