I was just thinking about this today. Outside of Burnett, and I think Bediako, who do we have confidence in/feel will return next season from the current team? I know there are many who can, but I can’t say I have any confidence they will outside of those 2.

I really hope Oats can grab two good guards in the portal. Can't go in to next season relying on freshmen I don't care how talented they are suppose to be.
oats keeps wanting the players to play harder. maybe they are just not that good.

I’ve said this 100 times. Maybe they just aren’t made for this system. That makes it look like they aren’t playing hard when they are having to do things they aren’t good at. Tweak some things maybe…

Other than Shack and Gary, these are all Oats recruits. Who is to blame if they don't fit his system?

I think Gary, Bediako, Miles, and Holt return. Won’t be surprised if any transfer but I’d bet those guys come back. Ambrose and Tchikou likely to take off. JD to the draft, Ellis graduate to the draft. Shack, Gurley, Rojas to the business world. Quinerly may be a wild card bc I do believe he has eligibility remaining and he isn’t a sure draft pick. So with the 5 signees that will put us a 9-10 max. Definitely going to be active in the portal.

I can see this, but you forgot Burnett.

This ^^^^^^^. We need them to be good shooters, and one has to be a PG or combo G if Q doesn’t return, since, outside of true freshman Bradley, we will not have another PG on the roster.

Looks like we will really need to hunt down a PG, guard, and a solid 4-5 in the portal. I’d say finding a great defensive guard would be a huge focus and if we could find a rim protecting 5 that’d be fantastic. Just need another ball handler at Pg if Quinerly leaves.

To be fair, it’s tough right now. He also lost Primo unexpectedly as well as Burnett. He has a 45% three point shooting pg who is now a 20% shooter. He went out and got Frenchie over everybody and the kid got hurt and apparently hasn’t been able to get it turned around. Pretty rough go from a luck standpoint. And for those who would say Quinerly’s shooting is Oats’ fault… no… head coach cannot make open jumpers

Right, because after 365 days of being in Tuscaloosa he should be able to convince every kid that he wants to forsake previously established relationships to come to a region that hasn't shown success in a single 17 year old's lifetime.

Im starting to agree. If your gonna run and throw up this many 3s youve got to be able to get back n play defense.

This will likely be a very different team next season. There might be 3 players on the current team that will still be around after graduations, portal defections, early draft hope exits, and general don't want to be here anymore kids move out.

I think Oats is learning the hard way that it's tough to make a team function at a high level every game when maybe they don't fit what he wants to do..

Is there anybody from the 2022 class we’re still recruiting, or anyone in 2023 the staff is trying to get to reclassify? Would love to add another high school guard in this class.

It seems like we could have another 3+ scholarships open including the 5 kids we’ve already signed.

Leaving
1. JQ
2. Shack
3. Gurley
4. Rojas
5. Ellis - any chance he comes back for a 5th year, utilizing the free covid year?
6. JD - any chance his status has changed as a for sure 1 & done? Not looking for people’s opinions on whether he should or shouldn’t be.

Then we have some underclassmen forwards who haven’t shown much here and will likely get passed by some or all of Miller, Pringle, and Clowney when they get here -

7. Ambrose-Hylton
8. Tchikou

Have to think it’s almost guaranteed at least one of these guys isn’t on the roster next season, if not both

Then there’s Miles and Holt. I would imagine both will still be on the roster next season, but with Burnett returning from injury and Griffey coming in, they could see their minutes not being what they want at the 2 & 3 and decide to leave.

So unless we have someone return who isn’t expected to, we still have at minimum 2 scholarships open, very possibly 3, and maybe as many as 4. We’ll definitely need to add some experience from the portal, but I hope we can add another talented high school kid or 2 who will be around for 2-3 years.

Thoughts @Harper41 @mr4bama everyone else?

i was just looking at elija fisher in the 23 class we were recruiting hoping he would reclass. seems he has droped us from his list. might have to depend on the portal.

The portal was mighty kind to auburn this year. Hoping we can find a few key pieces to come in and fit in what will be a very talented team that will have to mature and mesh together quickly. It’s a doable thing in hoops.

this year, Auburn has
Wendell Green - transfer
KD Johnson - transfer
Cody Kessler - transfer
Jabari Smith - freshman

How’s that working out for them?

#'s 1, 2, 4, 10, and 25 will be back, I doubt anyone else will. Got a 5 man #3 recruiting class coming in and CNO can get help with 3 from the sportal 🤓

No oats is referring to effort on the defensive side of things ..there are times when bama just won’t go that extra two steps to cut off the ball.

on offense .. bama has shack and Q
Ellis is a head case right now

Maybe they aren’t quick enough in spots to go the two extra steps fast enough? I’m positive we aren’t good enough to pressure as hard as we try to sometimes bc we get blown by off one dribble.

Technically all five of bama players have their eye on the “dribble” and if they dribble gets past the defender they are supposed to stop the penetration themselves but if the third bama defender doesn’t help on the abandoned offensive player , your team defense is screwed.

And that’s where auburn exploited us time and time again.

You’re correct in that bama is easily beaten off twh dribble but it is those last two steps that are killing the team defense.

I wouldn’t say we are in “help” like we should be often. We are more interested in denying passes than helping.
