I know that this happens every year. Especially for a coach like CNO who has quickly
jumped into the forefront of college basketball. But I worry about CNO being
mentioned as a prime candidate for the Indiana job. I am not saying that CNO
is at fault but I am concerned that this serves as a distraction at the point of the
Tournament starting. The argument about a buy out is mentioned but Miller's
buy out was paid by a donor. So, money would be no problem for Indiana getting
any coach. Alabama needs to do Whatever it takes to keep CNO.
I hope this doesnt hurt the players focus for the coming games.

Oats buyout now is $13 million! I think that would be an issue right now for virtually any program in the country. Plus the fact that Oats agreed to such a buyout tells me how much he really wants to be at Bama.

Oats shut that down pretty quick by saying publicly he was not Interested. Seemed pretty final about his answer!

I personally believe Oats isn't going anywhere for a long time, but what else would you expect him to say? Saban said the same when he was in Miami and wound up at Bama a short time after.

He may leave but he talked about the buyouts and extension in terms of commitment not money. Also, he seems like the type that would not want to bounce his kids around and his family seems to like Tuscaloosa. I doubt he leaves for Indiana. I think Michigan State after Izzo is the biggest threat.

Coach Oats has said he has been given everything he wants in order to be successful in Tuscaloosa. He's said the facilities and resources are among the best in the country. He says he shares the same advantages that the football program has in terms of practice facilities, medical resources, trainers, technology, weight room, locker room, and player lounges. He has also said the Coleman is no barrier to recruiting, and although a new arena may benefit the fans, it's not an issue for him. He can't wait to get 15,000 fans in Coleman. The Alabama Board of Trustees, Administration, and Faculty buys in to a Championship Culture and is one of the most supportive group of educators of athletics. He is now approaching Nick Saban status on being sought after for TV appearances. His family loves the weather, Tuscaloosa, and their new friends. He preaches "Selfless Love" (Treat Each Other Well and Love The Community). He is loyal. As long as pay is competitive, I just don't see him jumping ship. He can cement a legacy at a sports loving University and state. Just my opinion . . .

Ditto to ALL of those... Plus he has an affinity for Wimp & Bama Basketball as he grew up watching Wimp, McDyess and Big Shot Rob and the Bama teams back in the day.

I agree with your comments, but Indiana donors paid Millers $10 million buyout with no problem..
I dont think money would be the issue for Indiana.

I can give you multiple reasons for no Coach wanting to go to Indiana:

1. Unreasonable Expectations

2. Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Maryland, Ohio State and Illinois as competition on a yearly basis.

3. He has gone from High School Teachers pay to over $3,000,000+ a year in a short time and has six years guaranteed.

4. Michigan State and Izzo's age. I think we could not stop him from taking that job at any salary.

5. JQ, Primo, Shackelford, Miles, Ellis, Ambrose Hilton, Frenchie, Gary, Davison and others actually give him a better chance of being competitive for all the marbles next year as he could be in four years at Indiana. I don't say this to take anything away from Shackelford, Primo, Ellis, and JQ, but I really believe that a healthy Gary might be a superstar in waiting and could easily develop into a Wes Unseld or Charles Barkley type of player. Gary has that kind of potential and could carry a team of very talented Defense minded Offensive players to the top spot. I could see the next Alabama team, even without Jones and Petty, Jr. being in the preseason conversation for the top spot.

I am not the least bit worried about Coach Oats leaving at the end of the season and if he does, he is not the math teacher we thought he was.

If he leaves, he leaves. Can you blame coaches for not holding to contracts in an atmosphere in which schools also don't honor contracts? You can be fired at the drop of a hat.

That being said, I hope and think that he has more integrity than leave a team in the lurch. I try not to worry about whether Multi-Millionaires are going to change jobs for more $$$$.

Not saying that he does leave now, but if he does. He's just proven you can win here, and the $13 million we would receive in his buyout would go a long way to getting a top notch coach.

With all that being said I don't remotely see him leaving now.

Following Izzo might be similar to following the Bear. Might not do that as Bama may be considered a top tier program as good or better than MSU by then. He can win a championship here and have a statue out side the remodeled bb palace. It will be his house that he built. Also if he ever has grandchildren here he will be anchored down. I predict he stays 20 years.

Most of them don't read all this crap.

Knowing CNO's penchant for statistics, he should readily see that Bama is a high percentage shot - a layup or 3-pointer at succeeding - whereby starting over at IU or anywhere would be a 2-point jumper. ROLL TIDE

He can have the money here, the control, the lack of pressure and he can do that in a conference much like Clemson does in football in the ACC ( not heavy competition and a easier path).

I think as long as we are committed to Oats and the basketball program, he will be here. We just got to keep feeding him and get to the promised land of the NCAA championship.

You can win both football and basketball here. Wimp and CM proved that. In fact, you can win any sport ( I’m also looking at you baseball) here at Bama. The support and money are here. Just got to get the right pieces and commit to doing it. It will come

I’d go after San Diego State’s coach if I were IU and call it a day.

He will have them competing for the league title in a few years.

I have been waiting years for this team, so I am not borrowing trouble now. Instead I am just sitting back and enjoying. I have confidence in Greg Byrne keeping his staff intact.

Take away Bob Knight’s success there. Are the a blue blood?
Nope and thats why UofM would be the only team that he would leave for. Maybe Mich State. And UofM has their man. I dont think hed be interested in blue bloods unless they five him a long contract with just as much buyout as at Alabama

I'm not going to say the Oats won't leave at some point if he gets an "I can't turn it down" offer from whatever his "dream job" might be. I just think it's too soon in his current position at Bama for him to even consider leaving at this point. I think/hope we have him for a decade or longer.

The only one that worries me is when Izzo retires from Michigan State.

It is a good thing that he is wanted by other programs--and ultimately it his choice if he departs--

Personally, I think he is here for the long haul--

He is getting paid well, and enjoying the fact he made the program better--and heck---Indiana or Alabama--Enough said!!

Yep. As many on here have noted, Indiana is way overhyped as a basketball powerhouse. Outside of Bobby Knight they don’t have a whole lot going... except for the reality that as a fan base they are basketball obsessed.

If CNO stays at Alabama, they will name buildings and gyms after him when he retires. He may not be interested in that. But, this may not be the case at other schools. I think he knows he has a great gig at Bama.

Greg Byrne will make sure the Oats family is happy in Tuscaloosa.
Its kind of nice that other teams want the basketball coach at Bama for a change.

Historically, even for football, schools are willing to pay just about anything to fire a coach, but that is not true for hiring. The highest buyout paid in recent history was Florida paying 5 million to hire Jim McElwain.

What I think makes IU a bit different is the passion for basketball.

People grow up wanting to play basketball in the state of Indiana.

IU will always have support of the fans.

Just hope he gets to see how Coleman can rock when full. With the type of basketball his teams play the old lady will be rocking.

Saban: 'I'm not going to be the Alabama coach' 12/21/2006

After repeated denials, Saban takes Bama job 1/3/2007

No one EVER shut down talk of a job better than CNS ........... I think he meant it when he said it but as the old saying goes "stuff happens". We had plenty of questions surrounding our program when we went after CNS including being turned down by Rich Rod. IU picked up the phone and 2 donors paid off Miller. Their phones still work.

I think he stays. The promises about the arena and their delays .... while he watched the football changes happen all around him .... certainly do not help. jmo the AD should be working overtime to get the BB arena fast tracked hell act like it is football.

I have to be thinking that Pettway is taking a lot of his philosophy, Xs and Os in for the future!
