jumping out way ahead of south alabama in the ncaa tournament and getting beat at the buzzer on a three-point shot. that was a good bama team. don`t remember the year.
I remember it all to well. That ‘89 Bama BB team was very underrated. It was more than good enough to go all the way that year. We had a big lead at HT of that game(I think 17), and blew it to South Alabama’s peanut butter and jelly nicknamed backcourt. If we had won that game (which we should have), we would have faced eventual NC Michigan next, and we matched up great with them(I would have guessed the line would have been Bama + 2 1/2). I have a lot of Michigan fans, and they all told me they were concerned about playing us next that year. If that Michigan team could win it all that year, we could have easily beat them, and done the same.jumping out way ahead of south alabama in the ncaa tournament and getting beat at the buzzer on a three-point shot. that was a good bama team. don`t remember the year.
Well my friend we do agree on some things don't we.....Just a horrible memory and game.
I agree. Many people have forgot about that ‘89 team because of that bs 1st rd loss, but it had the talent, and was playing well enough going into the NCAA tournament, to go to the Final 4, especially, as you said, with the slate they would of had in front of them if they had won that game.Wimp has offered a lot of ill comments about that game. Of all the one sided awfully called games we've had in Rupp and in Nash none were as bad as the second half of that game. A lot of weird circumstances too. Even Cecil Hurt couldn't offer much about that game without losing the words to describe the disaster.
The icing on the cake there is Mich had a fairly easy run to the final 4 with us losing that game. We would have wrecked that Mich team and most folks knew it.
Wimp's curse was that he could never adjust to the flow of each tournament. One year they're calling one thing and he adapts but its something else the next year. Or he over coaches and asks a team of thoroughbreds play a slowdown game against Loyola when we could have raced them out of the gym. I've always wondered how his time coaching in T-town would have gone if he'd had just one of his 80s teams bust through to the final 4 like it was capable of doing. He had at least 3 teams that went about 8 deep with players capable of beating anyone. That team that lost to South Al I think should have rolled to the final 4.
Wimp said the decision to slow it down against Loyola was the wrong decision, he had the horses to run with those guys and the players knew it but, to their credit, they played exactly how Wimp wanted them to.Wimp has offered a lot of ill comments about that game. Not only do I remember it, I was there at the Omni to see it in person. That game had no business being close. I’ve never left a Bama basketball game so shocked in my life as I did that day. It was a long, miserable Marta ride back to my Buckhead hotel after that one.jumping out way ahead of south alabama in the ncaa tournament and getting beat at the buzzer on a three-point shot. that was a good bama team. don`t remember the year.
