Everyone knows about the top 10 NET and KenPom ranking that Alabama has and everyone knows about their #1 adjusted offense, but I wanted to take a more specific dive into some of their stats and where they stack up with the rest of the country:

Alabama’s identity is shoot a lot of 3’s, layups, and free throws… and they’ve been so elite in every one of those categories. In parenthesis is their ranking in the country:

3 attempts/gm: 29.4 (12th)
3 shooting %: 39% (12th)
Made 3’s/gm: 11.5 (5th)

FT att/gm: 24.4 (21st)
FT%: 77% (17th)

Now let’s check out their effective and true FG% (it’s elite too):

Effective FG%: 58.5% (6th)
Overall FG%: 49% (24th)

An effective FG% basically accounts for a three pointer accounts for 3 points while all others count for 2.

It is no secret that Alabama has won with their elite offense this season, and this is why they rank 2nd in the country in PPG at 92 ppg.

The aspect that has been holding them back from winning some of these big games has been turnovers and defense.. these stats are troubling..

Out of 351 division 1 teams, here is how Alabama ranks in some important categories:

Scoring defense: 76 ppg (280th)
FG% defense: 43% (162nd)

Turnover margin: 1 (190th). They’ve forced only 4 more turnovers than they’ve committed.

Forced turnovers: 11.93/g (235th)

When Alabama has had some of their best teams, they’ve been top 15 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.

Right now, their adjusted defensive efficiency is 76th, but is 42nd after SOS adjusted.

If Alabama isn’t forcing turnovers, they’re having to defend for 30 seconds..

They don’t have the guys to have to do that this year. Their effort has been there majority of the time, but there’s far too many mental lapses allowing easy scores for teams. That’s what happened against Vanderbilt.

They’ve faced some of the best offenses in the country..

So they’ll only face easier competition in that regard as the season goes on, but the focus just has to be there and sustain.

Overall, Alabama is a super dangerous team that gets in their own way too often.

There’s still time and I think they will pull together defensively.
