4. College football coaching carousel

Never seen anything like this before. The continued comedy of the Tennessee coaching search has been both gut-busting and overall just sad. After going a dismal 0-8 and 4-8 in the SEC Tennessee let go of Butch Jones and the hunt was on, but the hunt for a new coach has been so unsuccessful that it was rumored North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un even turned down the job.

The story begins to pick up steam when Tennessee looked to of hired Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, but the school received incredible backlash, even White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made a public comment on Facebook criticizing Tennessee for hiring someone with ties to the Jerry Sandusky abuse case.

After the deal died with Schiano, Tennessee was looking to hire Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, but Gundy turned down a massive contract to stay in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Then Tennessee went after Jeff Brohm, but it’s unclear if there was any truth to that, so the next coach in line was N.C. State’s Dave Doeren who turned the job down on Thursday.

Long story short, no coach has wanted to be the head coach at Tennessee and no coach has been hired at Tennessee ending the month of November. The latest update is that talks with Washington State Head Coach Mike Leach have gone well. Is this real life?

Here is a running list of coaching changes

5. Alabama basketball’s continued rise

The Alabama Crimson Tide Basketball team s now 6-1 following their thrilling 77-76 win over Louisiana Tech on Wednesday evening. This team has generated more headlines in their first seven games than last year’s team did all season. From their opening win against Memphis to John Petty’s 10 three-point performance to their three on five game against Minnesota, where Collin Sexton dropped 40, this team has proven to be exciting and the seats at Coleman continue to fill. Their frontcourt play is very solid as they great guard play from Sexton and their low post play has shown improvement with Danta Hall proving to be a very strong finisher.

While the defense could and should improve, December will prove to be challenging with a trip to Arizona, a game against Texas, and playing host to Texas A&M on December 30. If Alabama wins even two out of three of those games, they should have plenty of momentum to jump into SEC Play and play among the top of the league. This team is very special, go watch and support them, while those freshmen are still here.

6. Thoughts on Collin Sexton

He’s been more than I expected him to be in all honesty. I knew he would be an impact player, but he is a top five NBA guy no question. Currently he is averaging 30 mins per game, 24.7 points per game, which I believe leads the SEC, and you can feel his energy when he is on the court each night. He’s capable of changing the game, in their last game against Louisiana Tech there was a point he was 2-11 from the field, but he never got frustrated and made up for it at the line hitting 9 of 11 free throws including the two to seal the game at the end to finish with 22 points. He’s the type of player that TVs will highlight during March, the type of player that comes through just once every 10-15 years.

7. Back to football, let’s talk recruiting

If you have not checked out Andrew Bone’s thread on the recruiting board titled “Coaches on the Road Central” go do it now. The thread is packed with information regarding the Alabama football coaches on the road this week. Two photos that have impressed me: The photo of Cameron Latu with Tosh Lupoi. My goodness, Latu looks grown and makes Lupoi look small. Latu is a four-star defensive end out of Salt Lake, Utah that is 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, but to be honest, he looks 245, maybe 250. The second photo that jumped out was of Emil Ekiyor Jr. with Nick Saban and Brent Key. Ekiyor has the biggest lower body I’ve seen in a while, I mean those legs are on there. Haha.

The coaching staff is all over this week, today on Friday Ansley is visiting with Patrick Surtain and five star Ohio State commit Emory Jones.

9. December reading

I am an avid reader and this month I am reading the Intellectual Devotional. Daily lessons from seen fields of knowledge. Learning about Walt Whitman, a touch on Metaphysics, The Parthenon, this wide range of stories is a great escape to meditation. Check it out. Also finishing up Endurance about Ernest Shackleton and his crew that was shipwrecked in the Antarctic circle.
