Obviously Tua earned the right to start the first game, but a lot of you guys are triggered that Saban is not just going to throw away Jalen Hurts here’s why.
1. Hurts is like a son to Saban, they are close. Saban and Locksley. He does everything you would want a player and son to do. Saban admires how he overcame adversity look back to the Ole Miss game 2016, that’s when Saban fell in love with him as a player. Also, loves how he competes and finds ways to win.
2. This is the biggest reason. Jalen Hurts saved Sabans ass and helped cover his biggest flaw at Alabama, QB recruiting and evaluation. Out of all QBs recruited while Sabans been at Bama until now, only one has started more than 1 game (AJ McCarron, an in-state kid that took 3+ years to develop). All others had left the program, I will list below. The BIGGEST Saban QB blunder was offering Gunner Kiel over Jameis Winston and the best QB recruit from Alabama since Jemarcus Russell goes to FSU and wins the Heisman and NC, Gunner Kiel never plays a significant down.
3. Because of Saban and staffs shortcomings at QB recruiting and evaluating Hurts was forced to play earlier than he should’ve. He didn’t get a chance to sit watch and develop as a young QB, like McElroy, AJ, even Tua as Saban likes ala NFL style. He had to struggle before everyone’s eyes and it did a number on his psyche and the Tua situation is doing even more so now he’s pressing consistently. Saban knows that this is his fault so he’s projecting this and protecting Hurts. I don’t blame him but Tua is the first QB recruited by Saban who is elite. So Hurts, Tua and AJ are the only ones to play significant snaps. This is why, going forward, you will see Hurts. Next week, you will see him A LOT.
