HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

It has been often said that the home field advantage in football is worth 7+- points. If that is the case why do we continue to allow the UGA's and LSU's of the world play SEC Championship games and National playoff games in their home away from homes? In the early 90's there was a big stink about the SEC championship game being played in Birmingham because of the advantage it gave Alabama. I believe it is estimated that uga has as much as 70-75% of the crowd when they play in Atlanta. I would imagine that in most cases LSU would have the same advantage when they play in New Orleans. LSU has won 3 national championships since 2002. Guess where each of those 3 championship games were played - THE BIG EASY

Just something to ponder.

Alabama practice notes (12/28 Sugar Bowl prep)

NEW ORLEANS — Alabama took part in its third practice of Sugar Bowl week as players worked out inside of Caesers Superdome on Wednesday morning.

Here are a few notes from the media viewing session.

— Alabama’s two first-team inside linebackers were senior Henry To’o To’o and true freshman Jihaad Campbell. Starter Jaylen Moody was once again not dressed out with his right arm in a sling. Redshirt freshman Deontae Lawson was dressed out but spent the media session riding the stationary bike. Ian Jackson and Kendrick Blackshire were Alabama’s second-string pairing at inside linebacker.

Campbell has appeared in eight games this season, serving on the kickoff coverage and return teams as well as on the punt return team. According to Pro Football Focus, he has taken part in just one defense snap this season. Campbell, 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, came to Alabama as the No. 29 overall player in the 2022 class.

— Darian Dalcourt spent time on the station bike but also participated in reps at center with the second-team offense.

— Alabama’s first-team offensive line consisted of Tyler Steen, Tyler Booker, Seth McLaughlin, Emil Ekiyor Jr, and J.C. Latham from left to right. The second team unit was made up of Elijah Pritchett, Terrence Ferguson, Dalcourt, Jaeden Roberts and Kendall Randolph from left to right.

— I got a closer look at JUCO receiver Malik Benson. He is listed at 6-1, 185 pounds and looks like someone who has already been playing college football for two years. It’s hard to judge him from the media availability as the receivers were just working on ball-security drills, but he looks impressive physically.

Football 🏈 Five matchups to watch during the Alabama-Kansas State game

Tide Illustrated takes a look at five matchups to watch as Alabama and Kansas State get set to square off in for the first time ever on the gridiron.

Tyler Harrell- Help me understand this one

Harrell came to Bama with great expectations. Sub 4.2 speed, average of over 19 yards per catch. Now I know he was injured for most of regular season but why is he not mentioned when we talk about stretching the field. Can he not get open , or can he not catch Bryce's ball, or has he been in the doghouse because he can't block?

Football 🏈 Alabama analyst Alex Mortensen joining Trent Dilfer's staff at UAB

Alabama analyst Alex Mortensen, who was in his second stint with the Crimson Tide, has been hired as the offensive coordinator at UAB by new head coach Trent Dilfer, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.

Mortensen, 37, returned to Alabama in June of 2019 after coaching the wide receivers for the Birmingham Iron in the short-lived Alliance of American Football. Mortensen has served as an offensive analyst since, even helping fill in for offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien ahead of the College Football Playoff in 2021 after the play-caller tested positive for COVID-19.

Football 🏈 Alabama OC Bill O'Brien quells NFL coaching rumors

In his lone media availability, Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien played down rumors linking him to the OC job with the New England Patriots.

Good grief!

Bama loses to Tennessee and Facebook fills up with Vols posts.
then they lose to South Carolina and they disappear.
now, after signing day, they post about every single player They signed.
why does this crap find its way in to my feed.
im trying to make the Best of it by making fun of their three stars, uniforms, etc.
im trying to do it very subtly so they don realize I’m making fun of them.
I think it’s working because no one has fired back at me.
for example, one of the players was holding the crystal football, so I ask what year was that from?
I hate Tennessee!

Alabama practice notes (Sugar Bowl 12/27)

NEW ORLEANS — For the first time since August of 2021, the media was given a glimpse of Alabama’s practice as the No. 5 Crimson Tide worked out inside of Caesers Superdome on Tuesday morning ahead of its Sugar Bowl matchup against No. 9 Kansas State on Saturday.

Here are a few notes from the media viewing session.

— Starting Alabama linebacker Jaylen Moody had his right arm in a sling and did not dress out for practice. He spent the period on the stationary bike. Fellow inside linebacker Deontae Lawson was dressed out but was also limited. He had a brace on his left knee and rode the stationary bike while I watched him.

— Alabama defensive back Jahquez Robinson had a support strip on his hamstring. He was going through drills with the rest of the cornerbacks.

— Alabama's cornerback order was Kool-Aid McKinstry, Eli Ricks, Terrion Arnold, Earl Little II, Jahquez Robinson, Malachi Moore and Antonio Kite.

— Jordan Battle led the safties followed by Brian Branch, DeMarcco Hellams, Caleb Downs and DeVonta Smith.

— Injured defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe (neck) was not dressed out and was walking the stairs during practice. He was joined by inside linebacker Demouy Kennedy, who also wasn’t dressed out.

— Early enrollee Eli Holstein was throwing with the rest of the quarterbacks. Early enrollees aren't able to play in the Sugar Bowl, but he has an impressive frame for a true freshman.

— I believe Jalen Milroe might have just been having some fun, but the backup quarterback took a rep at wide receiver. He looked pretty good, too. Before everyone makes too big of a deal out of it, Milroe was wearing a black, non-contact jersey and also spent the period with the quarterbacks.

— Alabama's first-team offensive line appeared to consist of Tyler Steen, Tyler Booker, Seth McLaughlin, Emil Ekiyor Jr. and J.C. Latham from left to right.

— Darrian Dalcourt was dressed out but spent the period on the stationary bike.

— Early enrollees Caleb Downs and Brayson Hubbard were working out with the safeties. Downs was wearing No. 18 and Hubbard was wearing No. 27.

— Early enrollee Justice Haynes was wearing No. 22 and working with the running backs.

— I saw all of Alabama’s stars practicing, including Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr.

— It should be obvious, but offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was coaching the team despite being linked to the New England Patriots. He took an active role in practice, and the players seemed to respond to him well.

— As reported earlier, safeties coach Charles Kelly is still with the team after accepting the job defensive coordinator role at Colorado. Last week, Nick Saban spoke about how appreciative he was of Kelly for finishing “the right way.”

Sources: Bill O'Brien in conversations with New England Patriots

Alabama could soon be looking for a new offensive coordinator. Bill O’Brien is currently in conversations with the New England Patriots to become their next offensive coordinator, a source told TideIllustrated. O’Brien has been looking to return to the NFL, and with Bryce Young projected to be a top-five pick, a move is likely this offseason.

O'Brien is expected to remain with No. 5 Alabama for its Sugar Bowl matchup against No. 9 Kansas State on Dec. 31 regardless of how discussions progress with the Patriots.

News of the conversations comes after NFL Network reported that O’Brien is a “strong option” to return to New England earlier Saturday. O’Brien signed a two-year contract at Alabama in 2021 that has yet to be extended.
O’Brien has produced a top-10 scoring offense in each of his two seasons at Alabama. This year, the Crimson Tide is tied for fourth nationally averaging 40.8 points and is tied for 12th averaging 475.7 total yards.

Last season, O’Brien helped Young become the first quarterback in school history to win the Heisman Trophy. Young passed for a school-record 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns through 15 games last season. He has thrown for 3,007 yards and 27 touchdowns through 11 games this year.

O’Brien served as the Patriots' offensive play-caller from 2009-11. Before that, he spent two previous years in New England, serving as an offensive assistant in 2007 before coaching receivers in 2008.

O’Brien has been linked with a return to the Patriots since longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders last offseaosn. However, New England head coach Bill Belichick elected to hand offensive play-calling duties to former Patriots defensive coordinator and former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia.
