Football Recruiting Top 20 LB talks strong Alabama interest, previews upcoming spring visit

4⭐️ LB Nick Abrams has plans in place for a spring visit to Alabama.

Abrams reflected on being offered by Alabama and his strong relationships with Kalen DeBoer, LBs coach Chuck Morrell.

“It was really good just to show where they stand on me," Abrams said. "From Day 1 he told me that I’m a priority to him. He liked me a lot — my intangibles, my potential, the raw abilities I have and the instincts I have. So it was really good and they really amplified that on the visit. Really telling me about the day in the life of an Alabama football player."

New Low!

We’re six and six. We’re barely ranked. We’ve now lost our home opener. I have no idea what Murphy is thinking. He had to know that our pitching would not hold up. He’s got too much experience, he had to know that. It seems like to me it may be time for Murphy to retire. It seems like Byrne needs to get more aggressive. Women’s basketball, softball, gymnastics, for once proud programs and are now floundering with the exception of women’s basketball this year. It only took 12 years. Last year, Danny White of Tennessee fired a pretty decent coach to get the one he’s got now. I wondered what he was doing when he done it but apparently he’s done his homework. It wasnt that long ago, Tennessee athletics was a joke now their women’s program is back on track, national championship, baseball team, and an improved football team. As you know, I hate Tennessee and these are hard facts to admit.

Well, hoops, and baseball save the day.

Bama takes down Kentucky and looked pretty good doing it. ALABAMA baseball beat the number 12 rank baseball team in NC State. 4-0! They save the weekend. After Auburn beat gymnastics, and Coleman, women’s hoops, lose Tennessee, and women’s softball lose to Virginia Tech in the home opener, I wasn’t feeling too good. I now have a reason to live.

He was tough on the kids and some parents didn't care for it. Sorry but a coach should be tough you cannot have pansies on a football team. But it is a good story about Gary Kinne

Hoops 🏀 The 3-pointer: Takeaways from No. 4 Alabama's win over No. 17 Kentucky

Alabama gets a much-needed bounce-back performance on both ends and goes 2/2 against the Wildcats this season with a 96-83 victory. Some takeaways:

— Oats subs help Tide weather slow start
— Defensive pride limits free-scoring Wildcats
— Ball movement helps Alabama offense, Mark Sears shine

Big win for Alabama.

Hoops 🏀 How Mark Sears is re-setting the tone for Alabama basketball

Mark Sears is still soaring to new heights in his fifth season of college basketball. The best player for No. 4 Alabama was just that yet again in the Crimson Tide’s 96-83 win over Kentucky. He led the Tide with 30 points in the win, following up a 35-point performance in Alabama’s loss to No. 15 Missouri. It’s the first time in his career he’s put up back-to-back 30-plus scoring performances.

After his latest performance, Alabama coach Nate Oats said Sears is playing his best basketball on both ends since his arrival in Tuscaloosa. When asked where he thinks the spark has come from, Oats offered a simple explanation.

“I think he just wants to win,” Oats said after the game. “I think he came back to try to win a national championship. He came back to try to play his way into the NBA. Winning solves a lot of that stuff.”

More on Sears' growth as a scorer and leader after his latest performance:

Hoops 🏀 Tony's takes: Nate Oats' zero-tolerance policy whips Alabama into shape

Nate Oats has tried just about everything to fix Alabama basketball’s slow starts. After slamming a whiteboard to the court during the Crimson Tide’s loss at Missouri earlier in the week, he threw the kitchen sink at Kentucky on Saturday evening.

Hoops 🏀 Nate Oats sets Alabama basketball’s program record for ranked wins

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Forget history, Nate Oats was more concerned with correcting the present. Following back-to-back losses to ranked teams, No. 4 Alabama needed a response during Saturday’s matchup against No. 17 Kentucky.

The Crimson Tide snapped its two-game skid with a 96-83 victory over the Wildcats, and Oats broke a program record in the process. Saturday’s victory marks Oats’ 26th win over an Associated Press top-25 opponent. He now stands alone for most such wins in program history.

Alabama’s win on Saturday was its eighth ranked victory of the current campaign, breaking the single-season mark set by Oats’ 2022-23 team.

Hoops 🏀 **Re-watched the Missouri game

Sorry about the delay on this! But I figured I'd throw a couple of additional thoughts from the Missouri game before Alabama looks for a rebound this afternoon.

— I'm really interested to see if Oats' strategy of going very light at practice the last two days fixes the slow start today. Safe to say it was a lethargic first few minutes but overall I liked the lineup choice. I think Labaron Philon, especially being back healthy, has an excellent effect on offense by not putting all of the primary scoring AND playmaking duties on Mark Sears and letting him do more off-ball stuff. Alabama needs Chris Youngblood to find his shotmaking flow again, but Philon being out there pairs another creative guard next to Sears that could free Youngblood to focus on spot-up shooting. Sears is also still awesome and Wednesday was a great reminder of that. He's averaging nearly 20 points and five assists per game since the LSU benching.

— The ball movement was so much better than it was against Auburn. After Alabama figured out Mizzou's high ball pressure I thought things on that end were fine. The starts just have to be fixed, plain and simple. Can't have so many turnovers out of the gate and none of these remaining teams on Alabama's schedule will let it overcome a big deficit in the first few minutes. Kentucky is a good opportunity to keep that offensive momentum going. The Wildcats are in the 60s in defensive rating.

— If fatigue really was the problem, it would help explain one of the worst defensive performances of the season. Give Missouri some credit, I thought the Tigers were a bad matchup for Alabama because of their scoring balance and they have so many different ways to hurt teams. But Alabama didn't need to be perfect defensively Wednesday night — just string together enough stops but it didn't happen. The ball screen defense was the biggest thing for me. For two games now, defenders aren't staying level with shooters or doing a good job fighting through screens. The communication was awful (missed switches, assignments, etc) and that can't happen against offenses of Missouri's (or Kentucky's) caliber.

— We'll see how Alabama responds defensively, especially with this presumed extra rest. I'm not expecting a masterclass against a good UK offense, but I don't think Alabama's defense is a lost cause either. It was posted a bunch during the game and I completely agree with y'all that this team misses Derrion Reid dearly. He's one of the most versatile defenders and Alabama's needed him against the Longer Mizzou guards. We'll see how his injury saga goes moving forward but until then Oats and Co has to figure out a scheme with the absence of Reid.

— I liked what I saw from Aiden Sherrell in his six minutes. Grabbed a couple of boards — more than most can say in an area Alabama needed to dominate and didn't — got an assist, hit a 3 and got to the free-throw line. I don't think Oats is going to do anything drastic when it comes to Alabama's frontcourt and Clifford Omoruyi is still a key part that. But I think Sherrell has earned the chance to get some more minutes going forward and see how much he could potentially make a difference in postseason play.

More thoughts on the last two games below. Will have plenty of coverage of the Kentucky game later today!

We might get a win?!

ALABAMA is competing against Auburn tonight in Tuscaloosa in gymnastics. Those that follow, know that our scores have been terrible therefore we have lost virtually every match we had. However, Auburn may be the only team that has worse scores than us, so let’s hope we get a win. Let’s hope we have some much much much better scores than what we’ve been seeing
