This is for my mother's brother
Private Robert Prince
Company B 741st Tank Battalion
1st wave Omaha Beach June 6, 1944
Launched 6000 yards off shore in rough seas in amphibious Sherman DD tank with company B. Of the 32 tanks that launched, 27 of them never made it to the beach. At the end of the day on June 6, only 3 tanks out of 51 from company B and C were operational. 45 men had been KIA and another 60 were wounded.
Robert survived and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. He was killed in action on April 14, 1945 while guarding a fuel depot. He was buried in Holland because the US would not bury any killed American soldiers in Germany. He was 25 years old.
He wrote a letter to his mother dated December 24, 1944. He wrote that he did not believe he would ever be able to make it home and see Alabama again. She received this letter four weeks after receiving news that he had been killed in combat.
All Gave Some Some Gave All
Remember all those who gave the ultimate so that we can live in this great country.
